Chapter 49

Nate and her mother were back at their hotel, James was at work and she was sitting in the waiting room with Larry, Josh and Chris.  Her father went down to the cafeteria to get something to eat.  She lay her head on Chris' lap and they all watched television.  The lead entertainment story was about the Backstreet Boys.  A reporter was at the MGM Grand and stated that not many people believed that Nick had any personal problems.  She looked over at Nick who was staring intently at the television screen as a young girl stood before the camera,
"If there's such a problem why is Aaron still performing and out on the road?"  She didn't know what was going on with Nick and the group.  How things were being accepted by the fans.  She knew that Nick had alot of fans and they couldn't be thrilled about him missing their concert, especially when they didn't know why.  The young girl's friend nodded her head,
"We deserve to know what's going on.  They always talk about being honest with the fans, the need to be honest about this.  Is it a problem like with AJ?  That's what I think.  Nick's family isn't with him and he's not on the tour."  The first girl spoke up again,
"Yeah, they need to tell us so there won't be the rumors ane people worrying about him for no reason."  She couldn't believe it, just because the nosey girls didn't know what the problem was didn't mean they were being lied to.  There is a big difference between lying and keeping one's privacy.  She looked over at Nick again and he didn't seem to be in the best of moods.  In fact she knew he was angry.  He would tell her how frustrating it could be to keep that fine line between honesty and full disclosure.  There were things he just wanted to keep for himself, not that he didn't want fans to know things about him, he just wanted to feel normal and having things that not the whole world knew made him feel like he had some kind of a personal life.  He stood up and Josh followed him out, she sat up and turned to Chris,
"I'm going to go talk to him.  I'll be back."  She stood up and straightened her clothes as she walked out of the room.  She saw them headed towards the elevator and ran to catch up with them,
"Hey, are you ok?"  She didn't know why she but she wanted to make sure he was ok.  The pained look on his face as he watched the report made her heart go out to him.  He nodded his head,
"Yeah."  She glanced over at Josh before answering,
"Where are you going?"  He shrugged,
"I don't know."  She sighed,
"Mind if I tag along?"  He frowned slightly and shook his head,
"No, I don't mind."  They stepped onto the elevator and rode down in silence.  She didn't know what to say, she didn't exactly have any words of encouragement for him.  She glanced over at him and his head was down as they rode down the elevator.  Josh broke the silence,
"You want to go get something to eat?"  Nick nodded,
"Yeah, might as well."  He looked over at her,
"You want to go with us."  She shrugged,
"Sure, I'm hungry."  He nodded, they stepped off the elevator and her body tingled when he placed his hand on her back as they walked out of the hospital.

They sat in a little restaraunt and ate almost in silence until Josh spoke,
"So, um Quinn.  Do you mind if I go see Mac?  I haven't seen her yet."  She frowned,
"Yeah, of course.  You could have asked Nick."  Nick grumbled,
"I didn't want to make that call."  His voice lowered,
"Wouldn't want to fuck up again."  She looked at him for a moment, until Josh cleared his throat,
"Um, I need to hit the bathroom."  He left the table and Quinn frowned at Nick,
"What was that comment for?  Wouldn't want to fuck up again."  He shrugged as he sat back in his chair,
"Come on, she's your daughter."  He was so frustrating, she almost wanted to slap him.
"Nick, I never said that.  I've never implied that she was mine and you meant nothing.  I want you to be apart of her life."  He sighed,
"Maybe I shouldn't be."  She frowned,
"Are you trying to get out of your responsibility?"  He rolled his eyes,
"It's not like I have a choice.  You decided I was going to be a father."  She couldn't believe him.  Just like a man to act as if he had nothing to do with the process.  She leaned forward and hissed,
"No, you decided you were going to be a father when you fucked me."  She glanced around to make sure no one heard what she had just said.  She didn't mean for it to come out like that but she was so angry.
"I never fucked you, I l-"  He shook his head,
"Forget it."  She shook her head,
"You what?"  He shook his head,
"Nothing, go to the car I'll take care of the bill."  She didn't bother to argue with him, she was ready to get back to her daughter anyway.

When she walked back in the waiting room she walked over to Chris who was flipping through a magazine,
"Let's go for a walk ok?"  Chris studied her face momentarily and nodded,
"Ok."  She led the way and as they walked down the hall Chris asked,
"What's wrong?"  Quinn stopped and leaned against the wall,
"Nick, I dont know what to make of the whole thing.  I don't know what he wants or anything."  Chris nodded,
"He's going to come around Quinn.  He will."  It wasn't like Chris to defend Nick,
"What makes you so sure?"  Chris shrugged,
"I think he's just confused but he'll see the light."  Quinn nodded and looked down at her shoes,
"I hope you're right."  Chris placed her hand on Quinn's shoulder,
"I wanted to apologize for all that stuff I said to you when I found out you slept with Nick again."  She shook her head,
"Don't worry about it."  She looked over and saw Chris staring at her,
"What?  Why are you staring at me like that?"  Chris shook her head and sighed,
"Let me ask you something.  And be straight up with me ok?"  Quinn nodded,
"How do you feel about Nick?"  Quinn shrugged,
"I'm pissed at-"  Chris shook her head,
"That's not what I mean.  I mean, do you love him Quinn?  Be honest."  She licked her lips, she didn't know what to say.  So many times in the past she thought that maybe she and Nick could be, but that was before that day in her apartment, before that day in his New York hotel room,
"I don't know."  Chris immediately shook her head,
"Yes you do."  She sighed,
"Sometimes I think I actually do love him Chris.  Then he goes and says or does something so totally unforgivable."
