The Rajo Special
The Rajo special is a colourful rendition of a bygone era. I began with the photograph of the White Rose sign which I took at an antique shop near Goderich Ontario. The sign was leaning against an old building with a wall of battons. This created interesting shadow patterns behind the sign. An idea was hatched and I simply duplicated the effect with other period signs. The model AA Ford truck has always fascinated me and it was my choice of subject for the foreground. To make it a little more interesting, with a broader audience appeal, I added the Rajo Special to the bed of the Ford truck.
The Rajo Special is a modified 1923 model T Ford racing car and was one of the original Pike's Peak racers. This particular car is restored and in a museum somewhere in New York state according to my last reference.
I remember a time around 1981 when I had just completed restoring my 1928 model A Ford roadster. I went to a threshing bee, with my buddy Alf Vandam, at Milk River, Alberta. Someone there had driven up in a 1930 model AA one ton truck. It was noisy, it rattled, it was held together in a lot of places with fence wire, the paint was oxidized, there was a little rust, the mis-matched tires were bald and generally it was a sight. Do you know, that old truck had more character and charm to me than the roadster I had just restored. I'll never forget the experiences I've had seeing these relics of road and farm, in their original shape.
