Fear, it is capable of both enhancing and inhibiting a slave girl’s progress. It is indeed a frightening thing for a girl as a slave, to take herself and offer it to a Master and say, take me, dismantle me, and rebuild me to what you find pleasing. "One of the most powerful fears which all humans are subject to is the fear of the unknown. This translates into an underlying fear of change"(- Marcus of Ar). Since birth we have become what society and our own personal preferences have made us. One grows used to habits, especially the bad ones. We live in a society where people make excuses for a person's flaws and faults. Once a woman submits however, she is no longer what she was before. He will not make excuses for her, quite to the contrary she will find herself responsible for her faults. She is not Betty Jane who has a habit of lying or manipulating when it suited her. She is a slave who if caught by her master lying and manipulating will no doubt be punished for it. A gorean master is not a kinky boyfriend, if he sees a flaw he doesn’t find pleasing, he will ensure that flaw is remedied. This requires change, on her part and the first glimpse inside at what she really is, not what she has claimed to be. It was well stated by Pasha Gor that, "What you fear, is that I will not let you look anywhere but in the mirror, slave." No longer will she be judged by her job, her clothes, her money, what kind of car she drives or how pretty she is. As a slave, she does not own those things so to speak. A Gorean man, especially one that is her Master, is going to be looking at the woman, not the facades or distractions that hide her flaws. She will be forced for the first time to look within herself at what it is she really fears. It is not the shackles, the kneeling, the domination that frightens her. What frightens her is her own shortcomings, what makes her inadequate, the things that make her less than the perfect creature she so desperately wishes to believe she is. All the pretending is over and she either acknowledges her imperfections and submits herself to he who would convert them into something pleasing or she refuses and accepts the consequences following that choice.
Some such "diamonds" refuse to be cut and polished at all. They simply show up, and announce "I am already a diamond. Get your friggin hands off me, mister." Some males nod and bow and say "Yes ma'am. You're a diamond already. Okay dokey. Whatever you say. Can I please be your owner?" (- Marcus of Ar)
Any attempt to train a slave that refuses to be altered is impossible. She is then in simple terms stating she is the master and that she has the right to determine how much change is allowed to be brought upon her. She refuses her own slavery and places terms and conditions upon it. This type of girl is often not hard to pick out of a crowd. Such a slave is kidding herself. She will perhaps even in anger mock the efforts of other slaves who have the courage to change. Angry at herself for being unable to go the extra mile, she will point out the minute flaws of those girls, as if to say "see, she is no better than I am". This may be slavery in some form, but it is not gorean slavery and not something a gorean man is likely to stand for.
"“[The] rock must first consent to the cutting and polishing required to sculpt them into the diamond. Until that has been achieved, any effort spent to "train" or "instruct" such a one is a huge waste of time and effort, since that slave has not yet accepted the fact that it is the Master's right to do so."
- Marcus of Ar
It is only when she accepts as a slave that she is his animal to do with as he pleases, when she stops looking upon herself with veiled eyes that she can ever amount to anything. It is only when she can finally acknowledge her imperfections and beg the master willing to bring out the “diamond” inside that she can ever be as beautiful as she now only pretends to be.
