Apples and More In My Organic Orchard
Apples like the Ashmead's Kernal below are simple treasures in life. They need not the cosmetics that grocery stores heap upon them. Don't judge an apple by it's appearance is a thought I have every time I step into an orchard of antiques.

Apples That Truly Taste Delicious #1 Karminj de Sonnaville (Karmine) - Extremely lively flavor right off the tree; dense flesh; tartness comes from the Jonathon and sweetness from Cox' Orange; often has cracking and black dots; tree is sort of disease prone in Portland; despite numerous new varieties, this apple consistently is my favorite due to the complex combination of high sugar and tartness. #2 Suntan - Is it livelier than Karmine?? Another super tart/sweet gem that is medium-large and russeted almost completely; it is a cross between Court Pendu Plat and Cox's Orange, a combo that leads to a late bloom period; dense and sugary like above, but not as good of keeper. #3 Pomme Cloche - This is a Swiss apple and is better known as the Winter Glockenapfel; rich flesh is drenched in sugar; has tart overtones to accentuate the sweet; large size apple; will show some blemishing due to thin skin; name apparently means Bell Apple; is considered a culinary apple by Keeper's Nursery in England, but I find it soooo rich; couldn't detect any diseases on tree observed in Yoncalla. #4 Ashmead's Kernal - The most well-balanced apple a taster will come across; juicy flesh has just the right amount of sugar and tartness; some russeting is okay, but the more goldeny russet the better; mellows in storage to an average flavor; the tree has moderate vigor and crops better than some may have heard. #5 Pink Delight - Originally named "Pink #2" but not mass propagated; saved by Bill Schulz and renamed "Pink Delight" by Jim Gilbert at One Green World; apple is yellow with red striping, and is round and fairly large; red flesh is visible through the skin; flesh is dense like Airlie's and the taste is sugary sweet; I envisioned sugar cubes within many bites; little or no tartness; prone to bitter pit? Honorable Mention: Hudson's Golden Gem, Minnesota 447, Airlie's Red-Flesh, Scugog, Pink Lady (best of the store bought) |

Ken's Red is darker than the "Anna" seen here. If you haven't tasted a hardy kiwi, it is sweeter than a fuzzy. The skin is smooth and unobtrusive to eat. Overall, it's a great vine if you have the space to spare. Word of warning: Kiwis grow BIG-TIME.
Paw Paws are tropical looking and taste like the rare Cherimoya. If you have never tasted Cherimoya, it has a creamy texture and a banana-like taste. If cut in half length-wise, large seeds line each rich, soft fleshy half. They are perfect to eat by spoon, and in that sense they remind me of a muskmelon. The flowers are velvety purple/maroon and open like a bell with cuffs. They bloom in extreme slow-motion (over 3 weeks).

Chilean Guava is one of my favorite berries. The plant can be a bit leggy, but the fruit is quite tropical in taste. It reminds me of one of those frillsy drinks that people sip by the pool. The production has been fair so far on my 4 plants. They seem prone to a fungal disease that makes some leaves look chomped upon. Overall, an easy to care for plant that produces a uniquely flavored berry
