Synopsis
As the play opens, Paul Stone, a seminary student, is hiking through northern Spain on the Camino de Santiago, a holy pilgrimage. He discovers a small village and is asked by the villagers to interpret the rantings of a young woman who seems to be speaking in English. Helena, the young woman, has never spoken English, nor do the rest of the villagers. Paul writes down what she says. She tells the story of Mary Magdalene after the crucifixion, but the story doesn’t sound like it comes from the Bible. In fact, as she goes on, Paul wonders about where the story could be coming from. To him as a student of Christianity, it sounds like heresy. But he also finds the story compelling and beautiful.

By the time of Pentecost, Peter has taken charge of the Cult of The Way with a faithful, passionate and iron hand. True to the story of Acts Chapter 5, Peter accuses two cult members of keeping half of their possessions rather than donating them to the cult and they are struck dead, facilitating the rule of fear in the Cult of The Way. Mary Magdalene objects to this and tries to assert her influence as one of the Disciples, but Peter doesn’t accept her as a disciple, only as an important figurehead to provide inspiration for the women as they work to support the men in their ministry. After their confrontation escalates, Mary decides to leave and travels to the desert to seek enlightenment or perish.

It is Mary’s journey of discovery that propels the action of the play. Joining three Goddesses on a sacred quest, encountering pagans and wanderers, battling angels and assassins, Mary finds strength and Divinity within herself and fulfills her own destiny with fiery passion and an indomitable spirit.
