Sit or lie wherever you are comfortable and is reasonably quiet. This could be outside, in bed or a chair ifyou can gurantee you won't fall asleep. If it helps, burn incense and candles. Firstly, relax your whole body and breathe slowly but steadily. Try breathing in for a count of 4, holding in for 2, breathing out for 4 and holding out for 2. You may also want to meditate for awhile. Other helpful tactics include focusing on your third eye,the chakra located in the centre of your forehead. If too many thoughts and memories of the day distract you, ask the Goddess to help you concentrate and let them fade away. If you want, record youself saying to following passage, or get a friend to recite it. Otherwise, just try to remember as much as you can. Feel free to change or elaborate on any details. This method will work for some better than others, but as you practise you won't even have to think about it.

Imagine yourself walking up a dark tunnel. You can hear your footsteps echoing on the stone and feel the cold rough surface beneath your feet. It smells clean and natural, notthe least bit unplesant. You pause for a moment and touch the wall with the tips of your fingers. It feels reassuringly real and seems to hum and throb gently, like it's alive.

You continue upwards, unafraid and curious. At the end of the tunnel you see beautiful natural light. You advance, overwhelmed and in awe. You reach the light and pass through it, into what will become what is known as your sanctuary.
Your sanctuary is your own special safe place on the astral plane where all pathworkings will begin from. It can look like and be anything you like or feel comfortable with, a cave, burrow, cottage or cloud, absolutely anything. The chances are the first place you come to at this point won't be your eventual sanctuary - move, and change things until they fit. Flick through several ideas. As you complete journeys in pathworking, you will acquire more tools and gifts from the people you meet and the places you go. Try to remember every detail and how being there makes you feel, as this will make it easier to return. Many witches stress that you should never describe you sanctuary to anybody, with the possible exception of extremely trusted friends. This is partly because your sanctuary reveals a lot about you, also because some say that it is possible for another to enter your own sanctuary if they know enough about it, although personally I've never heard of this happening, better safe than sorry.

When you are happy with your sanctuary, you may want to perform a protection spell to secure it. Cast a
circle in the normal way, using whatever tools you find in your sanctuary, or none if you choose, and pour your own energy into your surroundings, watch them glow in golden light, send pentagrams and protective runes into the air.and make the sanctuary officially YOURS.

While on the astral plane, it is possible to experince or see unpleasant and disturbing images and scenes. This is fairly common when you first start pathworking. Please don't let it put you off, as it is easily solved. Remember that YOU are in control. Visualise youself in a protective sphere of blue light surrounding you and ward the thing away. The longer you spend in your sanctuary the stronger it will become and you will not encounter anymore of these while inside it. For this reason, it is a good idea to spend your first few pathworkings solely in your santuary, modifying it to your needs and getting know every corner and sending your energy into it, so that if anything on you journeys should upset you, you always have some where safe and secure to rest in before you go out again.
Pathworking
Pathworking is an inner journey to the astral plane, usually taken by witches to find answers to a question, discover inner powers, connect to a wider reality and find wisdom, peace and enlightenment. It will help you to learn more about yourself and the world around you. It is also great fun when properly practised.

This is desgned to find powers and answers from the elements, it is quite long but a truly amazing experience. You might want to prepare some questions to ask. You can do all the elements in one working or try one each day.

From your sanctuary, gather anything you think you might need, such as amulets or talismans you may have made on past journeys. If you want, have a set a travel robes ready for journeys.
Leave the sanctuary - this maybe difficult with some sanctuaries, but you should find away to descend. If you are nervous for any reason, visualise yourelf encased in a sphere of blue light. Find a path that leads upwards and follow it. Observe anything you may come across on the way - any people/animals, greet politely but don't let yourself to become distracted. You also might find something, a shell, wand, if something stands out feel free to take it (but ask the Earth if unsure).
You continue upwards, eventually reaching the top of a hill. Look out at the world, waterfalls, forests, rivers. Something yellow zips past you. You notice lots of thin yellow air spirits dancing around you. Their presence makes you feel very peaceful and calm. When they seem used to you and you're comfortable with them, ask them any questions you have or simply for guidance. Make a mental note of any answers they give, any images they show you or gifts they give you. Thank them and continue along the path.

The stony path starts to descend. The air is a lot warmer but amazingly energizing and invigorating. Sparks dance in the air around you. You turn a corner and see a fire, burning unattended. You carefully walk around the fire, noticing that it is composed of old dead wood. You see a spare piece by your foot. You pick it up and project into it a failing or habit you want to be rid of, then cast it into the fire. As you do this, scarlet spirits arise from the fire and weave around you. Do the same as you did with the earth spirits - wait for them to used to you then listen to anything they may say, ask any questions you may have and accept any gifts they may give. Thank them and bid them farewell before continuing along your path.

The path dips further down. You turn a corner and before you is a beautiful steaming lake of clear water, dotted with reeds and wildlife. Emerald green dragon flies spiral round your ankles. You approach the lake. You can hear the soft rush of a waterfall. You crouch by the edge of the lake and watch the water. After a while, familiar shapes start to emerge. Blue water spirits tiptoe on the waters surface and chase each other, making you feel free and vaguely reckless. Again, ask them any questions and graciously accept any answers or gifts they may have for you.Thank them and continue.

You take a detour from the main path and go into a thick green forest. The ground is covered in perfectly formed leaves under dappled golden sunlight, coloured from bronze to warm red. The air smells refreshing and comfortable. You go deeper into the forest, and become surrounded by some curious earth spirits. They float above you timidly. Eventually they descend. Once again, ask respectful questions, recieve gifts and advice, thank them and walk away. You follow your instints to guide you home as the path has gone. You turn another corner and find the path leading up to your sanctuary. And that's the end!
Journeys
These are just some rough ideas you can use. Feel free  to mix and match, just as long as you treat everything with respect. Again, you might want to record these on tape for guidance.

A self-cleansing journey, also used for healing. This is quite short and simple but very effective.

Leave
your sanctuary, you won't need any tools on this journey. The moment you are out of your santuary, a soft but insistent wind stops you. In front of you a staircase forms. It is made entirely of white wind, frozen in place. You start to climb. The steps are soft but feel very secure. You reach the top, a trap door into a world above.

The site that greets your eyes takes your breath away. A stream runs before you. Around you are delicate palms waving in the breeze and comfortably warm pure white sand underfoot. You dip your toes gingerly into the stream. Cooling crystal clear water washes over your feet. Bright light seems to travel up your legs and purify you.You wade downstream, watching the colourful birds arguing in the tree branches. After awhile the stream becomes deeper. You're in up to your knees and you can still see your feet at the bottom. You continue, feeling the water pulling past you and flowing through you. The water rises above your waist.

Eventually you come to the end of the stream. You stand in a beautiful oasis, surrounded by reeds and various insects. At the bottom of the pool you see a dark green stone. Instinctively you dive under and pick it up. You surface and examine it.The smooth green stone has delicate red lines running down it and a strange carving on it. Something inside you tells you is a bloodstone, used for cleansing the blood and various types of healing. It is a stone of Isis. You then recognise the carving as the symbol of Isis. You hold the bloodstone in your receptive hand and let yourself sink under the water. You feel filled with light and cleansed from the inside out. You drop the stone and feel the water swirl around you. Beneath you a hole opens up. You drop into it, moving down out of the water into air. Your feet land once again on the cloud staircase. You walk down and back to your sanctuary entrance.
