+ Zines (A-L)+ |
Don't Fall Asleep #3, $1.00, 32pgs, 1/4 sized |
A very cute zine. 100% Canadian but not patriotically so. Personal writings, a piece on why Christina <3's sign language, piece on shaving, "I hate men" (not exactly what you think!), and more. Very lovely zine in the cut n' paste tradition. Christina cut out a rectangle in the zine so the cover merely reads "Eep". Need I say more? Lovely, clever and sweet cut n' paste aesthetic. |

An Ode To No One (Smashing Pumpkins fanzine), $1.00, 32 pgs, *square shaped*/like a lyric booklet Copies made to order |
This is not an all out comprehensive guide to the smashing Pumpkins. It is heartfelt musings, factoids, a letter to Billy, pictures, and quotes to do with The Gods of Machine (smashing Pumpkins for the non-pumpkin nerds). It was made by me within the course of four days or so. I *also* accept trades for this, especially if you have a fanzine to trade for MY fanzine! Comes with a pull-out mini poster of Smashing Pumpkins circa 1991. |

Girl Swirl Fanzine #8, $2.00, 46pgs, 1/4 sized, One copy of this left. Attempts will be made to restock this item. |
Subtitled "Change is good, necessary and Inevitable" this zine serves as inspiration for those thinking about taking a big risk or going for something that may seem unlike their character. Taryn talks about her break up with her boyfriend and what led up to it, some of her family history, her parents, meeting a crush in person that she met on the internet, an old friend and how he left her life but eventually made a comeback appearence, looking forward the future, uncertainty, questioning her inner strength while simultaneously knowing that she is very strong to have been able to change so much about her life in such a short time, her decision to move to Boston, living alone and how it scares and excites her at the same time, and tons more . Includes a very cute cover with photobooth pictures of Taryn as seen (right). Really I can't do this zine justice with my humble description. A captivating read you'll probably end up taking in one big gulp. "The last few months have been terribly confusing for me. I've gone through some shit that has made me question my entire life. I don't have to write about it but I choose to for the simple reason that somebody must relate, and if so then maybe, just maybe they will be able to help me out. Walk me through this. Hold my hand and make sure I'm okay. Because, I admit, I don't know if I'm strong enough to get through this alone but I'm trying. I'm trying like a motherfucker". |

"So within, so without, constantly changing the physical outside as well as the thoughts contained within, trying to find her true identity in snapshots, 2nd verses, and pieces of dreams glued together. A picture's worth a thousand words or so I've been told. 13,000 words about a grrrl". (on a two page spread with pictures of me) |

Barbie War #3, $1.00, 48 pgs, 1/2 sized |
Barbie War is fierce and femme. Barbie War is about a grrrl being proud to be a grrrl, writing a zine (and how empowering it is), crushes, being anti-body hate (and why), "The other woman", anarchism/anarchist resources, her thoughts on Iraq, "Love story revised" (how Romeo and Juliet should've went), etc. I really enjoyed reading about what Anne has been up to in her life and her very endearing (and seemingly uncommon) obsession with The Dave Matthews Band. A solid zine that blends the personal and political nicely. |

How to Start a Revolution #5, $2.00, 32 pgs, 1/2 sized |
How to Start a Revolution is described as a 'light-hearted political zine' and beyond the political is also the personal. Jen answers the question, "What is a revolution" in this issue (her mom even writes her two cents on the subject!), and beyond the definition we read about various types of "revolution", the Riot Grrrl revolution, 'personal' revolution, The Revolutionary Knitting Circle (based in Calgary), a brief history on "revolutions", sexual revolution, and more more more!! Jen's cut n' paste skills are fantastic and this zine is Canadian! Hooray! Jen also writes "Escaping Suburbia". |

Escaping Suburbia #1, $1.00, 40 pgs, 1/4 sized |
Escaping Suburbia #1begins with a piece called "How it all began" in which Jen describes how she came to be as she is now. "My own personal revolution was when I changed. When my attitude and perception broke through the conformist barrier I was raised in, and I became freee...I did it on my own. Through exploration, reading, thinking, and realization. I started to wonder if there was more to life that tv and consumerism, more than the mainstream".... From which she goes on to explain how she found punk music and alternative lifestyles (that differed from the consumeristic pop iconic mecca from where she came). Then the zine goes onto a travel diary of sorts as Jen writes about her camping trip, travelling with her family, and more. A very solid read from a riotous pirate grrrl zinester. |
Heart Vs. Brain #4 (Jane + Nora Split), $1.00, 20pgs, 1/4 sized |

Heart Vs. Brain #5: Fever Dream Theory, $2.00, 32pgs, 1/2 sized |
In this zine Aubrey writes about her two alter-egos which sort of took her over during high school , Hazy Jane and Holy Nora, complete with character sketches and drawings of each of them and writings about how they affected her actions + decisions. Powerful + compelling. Unedited, written by Aubrey in one sitting. "Eventually, I settled into living a monologue. I narrated, while Jane and Nora recited my lines for me. I watched while they took the reins. Nora spent overcast afternoons in the park, writing and crying. Jane waited until the house was empty to kick a hole in the wall. Nora sang to herself in a crowded locker room and spent all her free time on the window seat in the school library. Jane skipped out on train fare. And I was stuck in the middle-- I was the push, the pull and the inevitable backlash". |
Heart Vs Brain #5 is written in a "Dear you" sort of letter fashion. To quote Aubrey on her description of this zine: "It's a series of ambiguous writings and unsent letters written over the past nine months. As the introduction states 'This is the single most intimate piece of work I've ever published', I have also devoted massive amounts of time and energy to this issue. The material included was narrowed down from over three hundred pages, and the words are the truest I've ever written. Sparse original photography. *very* text-heavy". |
Four Letter Word #2, $2.00, 24pgs,1/2 sized |
New. This is the "Bitch issue" of Four Letter word Makara declares. Inside you'll find rants about the difference between prejudice and racism, stereo-types that end up doing more harm than good, Makara de-constructs models, Eminem, the absurd standard of vapid pop stars , Disney, as well as pieces entitled, "Gay nation", "Being a girl, being a punk", and more. Fierce, very deeply personal and interesting . Her handwriting makes me swoon! Lots of good stuff here to read for sure. "Why is it that I can't walk down the street without being gawked at? Why I can't just live my life without the constant barrage of nasty slurs that fly from the mouths of every man i pass? Men older than my "father" that think if they shout 'nice rack' loud enough i'll go home with them. Only wanting me because I have breasts and a vagina. was i put on this earth as a vehicle to propel sexist mentality? Probably fucking not, I am my own person, my own womyn". |
Don't Fall Asleep #4, $1.00, 36 pgs, 1/4 sized |
Don't Fall Asleep #4 is Christina's latest zine. Bound with bright red ribbon with bright blue covers it makes you feel happy just looking at the outside cover. DFA #4 is hopeful about the future although the present isn't always the happiest. #4 includes a piece on Ice skating, long distance relationships, d.i.y haircuts from friends, computers, heart-break, silly things that happen when your desk is also yr bed, anxiety about the future, as well as a recipe for banana bread with peanut butter icing, all to the backdrop of vintage style clip art. Very tasty for the eyes, brain, and heart. Good for reading before taking a nap on your day off. |
