Cutting and Shaping the Neck, Headstock, and Fingerboard
At this point, I began my dubious relationship with our old Skill Jigsaw.  I used it for most of the cuts here, with the help of a few assorted handsaws.  Most of the shaping I did with a palm sander (with 60-grain sandpaper), an assortment of files, and a wood rasp I purchased late in the game.  After I got the shape about right, I used progressively finer sandpaper to smooth it out (100- to 330-grain).

3. After planing the ebony until both sides were relatively flat, I used Elmer's wood glue to attach it to the cherry.
4. Some C-clamps and a few makeshift clamps held everything together overnight.  In the meantime, I coated the inside of the gourd with white glue to catch any loose material I missed with the scraper.
5. Once the glue dried, I used my trusty jigsaw to cut the shape of the fingerboard and headstock from paper templates.
