Homeschooling in Nebraska

Homeschooling in Nebraska is pretty easy. You do have to fill out paper work from the NE Dept. of Education, but the paperwork is not very hard to fill out. You can simply call and either request Rule 12 forms, which you want, if you are homeschooling for academic reasons. If you are homeschooling for religious reasons, you need Rule 13 forms. We are homeschooling for both academic and religious reasons, and so far, there is no paperwork for both, so we went with the Rule 13 forms.

Once you have contacted the Department of Education and gotten your forms, fill them out as completely as you can. Please feel free to e-mail me if you need any help. You will notice that certain pages need to be notarized. Any bank can do this for free. These need to be turned back in to the Dept. of Education at least one month prior to beginning homeschooling, and by August 1st, every year after that. The legal ages that must be reported as being homeschooled are students between the ages of 7 and 15 years old. When you fill out your paperwork, you will see that it asks for a "monitor". The monitor is the teacher, or the one who will be overseeing what the children learn on a daily basis, i.e. the mother. (YOU DO NOT HAVE TO BE A CERTIFIED TEACHER IN NE TO TEACH YOUR OWN CHILDREN OR HOMESCHOOL SOMEONE ELSE'S CHILD). The father of the family is usually the principal of the homeschool. Of course these situations can be arranged visa-versa if the family chooses to. You will be asked for a name of your school, as you will be considered a private school. (We actually had fun with this one, as we tried to think of a name. If you want to, later on you can have t-shirts, class rings, diplomas, etc. made with your logo on them for your students! Be creative!)

You can also look into joining a Homeschool Group if you would like to have your children involved in activities such as PE, field trips, etc. It is also nice for you to have some support. If you don't know of a group in your area, try contacting the NE Christian Home Educators Association or the Home Educators Network.
