Christmas 2003 (Sometimes the down-scroll feature works better in iE than Netscape.) Greetings, friends. This is the first time the Platts family has tried a newsletter, so be forgiving! (Or blame Greg.) First the sad news. Liz’s mother passed away in October at almost 92. She had a long and fruitful and good life, but still we miss her. But Greg’s mother is still living independently at 88 in the same house in Nutley, NJ, that she moved into 50 years ago. Alas, there are no grandfathers to report on. On the home front, we completed the 22nd year in our house in Bethesda, celebrating by having someone else power-wash the redwood deck and redecorating the family room for the first time since the former owners did it in the ‘70s. And we got a new dishwasher (electric, not human). Updates: Jamie (24) left Nasdaq and joined the staff of the National Economic Council – still doing economic policy work. He can walk 11 blocks to work from Georgetown to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, and he even took his mother to the White House staff Christmas party! Plus he came in 719th in the Marine Corps marathon, down from 2002’s 998th. Chris (21 last week) is a college sophomore. He is focused almost entirely on art history, conservation, and preservation. He spent half the summer in Venice and half at the National Gallery in Washington – doing conservation projects and studying art. One of his many goals is to visit the 754 World Heritage sites, and he has only about 740 to go. Liz is in her 30th year, we think, of teaching elementary school – kindergarten at the moment. She keeps muttering about retiring, but she really enjoys what she does, and this year’s class is so wonderful that she’s forgotten about those challenging and exhausting times. I celebrated 23 years at National Geographic, the last half as treasurer. Thanks to a rebounding stock market, we reported a very good year after several that are best forgotten. On the volunteer side, I extricated myself after six years from a 10-hour-a-week finance job at St. Albans School. I can’t seem to figure out where all the extra free time is going -- Liz says, “…watching Law & Order re-runs.” On balance, everything looks good from here. We hope it’s the same for you, and we wish you all a Merry Christmas and a wonderful year to come.
