Grande Prairie Minor Football Society opened this Peewee season with a bang! |
At the 1st Annual Peewee Kick Off, our young athletes were on the field with Rob Harrod (receiver for the Eskimos) and Thomas Rayam (lineman for the Stampeders). Rob and Thomas did some basic skills and drills with the kids and answered some questions. I'm not sure who had more fun, Rob and Thomas or the kids? With wide eyes and big smiles, it was easy to see everyone had a blast. Lou Franco was there with the Grey Cup to teach our young football players and the public the history and the meaning of the Grey Cup. Here are some quotes from the big event: * "It's pretty good. How often do you get to see the CFL players in your hometown?" - Chase Norton * "It's pretty cool" - Forrester McKim * "It makes you feel a lot better when you see some of the bigger guys play" - Darcy Bateman * "It's always exciting for me. I enjoy interacting with the kids" - Rob * "I'm more than willing to do it, especially up here. It's a smaller town and I was born in Moose Jaw, Sask. To come from a small town you don't always get the exposure to some sports, so to come up and help out minor football and give some lessons to the kids is always a pleasure" - Rob * I can remember coming in and watching guys at that age and wanting to be a football player and trying helmets on and just living that dream. It's just amazing to see that same gleam in kids eyes that I had at one time" - Thomas * " We can't really break it down and teach the real skills to them, but we're just keeping the determination going and keeping the fire lit, letting them know they do have a friend out there in me and to play the game as hard as they can. - Thomas * "Football's a great sport. We're letting them know a little bit more about the Grey Cup. A lot of them hadn't seen it, don't know about the history of it. It's almost 100 years old and is part of Canadian history that they need to know about. It's more than a sport, it's a tradition" - Thomas * "We like to keep the Grey Cup at the Canadian Football Hall of Fame as much as we can because people come to the Canadian Football Hall of Fame and want to see the it, naturally, but we do, I would say, an average of 30-40 (trips) a year. Unlike the Stanley Cup, there isn't a replica model used for tours." - Lou Franco * "The question most people ask is 'is it the real thing?' We say 'yes it is.' We're not like the stanley Cup. This is the only cup we have and it's the original." - Lou Franco |
