The Faulker family of St. Marys will be giving thanks for more than turkey this year-the family will be rejoicing that they have a home where they can eat the traditional feast. Just 10 days after moving in to their Point Peter Landing home, the family almost lost the house to a fire. The hot water thermostat malfuntioned and a fire broke out. If it had not been for the quick thinking of 6-year-old Emily Falkner and 7-year-old Molly Falkner, the home would have burnt down Nov. 9, 2000. The girls were temporarily home alone when the fire alarm sounded and they raced outside and phoned for assistance......
For the girls, who are graduates of in-school fire safety training, the event was scary but manageable. "We did what they taught us to do," Molly said. "We called the fire department and we got out of the house."
At School, they taught us to find a meeting place, and that's what we did," said Emily.
Molly and Emily were students at St. Mary's Elementary School which participated in the Fall 1998 Safety Blitz held in Camden County. |

Michelle Ayers Age at the time of incident: 10 County: Rockdale On September 11, 1999, Michelle was home with her caregiver when she noticed smoke and flames coming from a back bedroom. Remembering the lessons she had learned in a Public Fire and Life Safety Education class the year before, Michelle immediately told her caregiver that they needed to leave home and call 911 from a neighbor's house. Michelle is an excellent example of how the "Public Safety Chain" works. Thanks to her call, the fire was extinguished.

For several months, firefighters with the Hazlehurst-Jeff Davis Fire Department, Denton Fire Department and Altamaha Fire Department have been going door-to-door canvassing neighborhoods placing smoke alarms in homes.
One of those homes is occupied by Ms. Angela Brewer. Ms. Brewer, an 88-year-old woman heard her smoke alarm going off. The warning device gave her time to exit her home before toxic smoke entered her bedroom.
The Hazlehurst-Jeff Davis County Fire Department has teamed up with the Jeff Davis County Safe and Sober Team to install smoke alarms in every home in Jeff Davis County. The smoke alarms are free to the public and made possible through a grant provided to the Jeff Davis County Fire Department by the Georgia Department of Public Health. The grant is funded by the Center for Disease Control, Maternal and Child Health Block Grant and Georgia Firefighers Burn Foundation.
