Carrow-Veld Cottages

is run on the old-fashioned concept,
whereby our guests are welcomed into
our home to share our lounge and dining
facilities; the bedrooms are situated in
the older of the two cottages i.e. C1857
with a private patio and courtyard garden
for the exclusive use of our guests.

Graaff-Reinet, South Africa
The rooms have wonderful high ceilings
so typical of the old Karoo homes giving
that air of space and coolness away from
the scorching summer sun. They have
original yellow-wood floors, ceilings,
sash windows and shutters.

Our in-house art gallery with its
water-colours, oils and wood-turnings
allow our guests to enjoy the
works of local artists.

THE ORIGIN OF THE NAME
“CARROW-VELD”:

From the Plains of Camdeboo by
Eve Palmer: “the early travelers who
crossed the Great Karoo called it
‘Carrow-Veld’, the ‘dreary waste’,
or simply ‘the desart’”. “Karo”, they
recorded, was a Hottentot word
meaning dry.
