Date but not roommate (thanks to Irina!)
You have worked on 80 projects in 22 years, including Mask, Pulp Fiction and Chicago Hope. Do you ever sleep?

Actually, I’ve started getting up at 5 a.m. and am eager to start the day. I’m an American; I love to work. Work is vacation.

Especially when you get to travel to Scotland and work with Gillian Anderson on the adaptation of Edith Wharton’s The House of Mirth.

I always hated being forced to read these types of books in school, but I love the way the era looks onscreen. Everything is more romantic. We used costumes including whalebone corsets tied so tight that breathing was impossible, but your waist looked great. No pain, no gain.
You’re also finishing up directing Annus Horribilis, with Mimi Rodgers, Allison Mack and Karen Allen. Do you like working with all those women?
It’s a girl’s story, so naturally [the producers] came to me – I have two sisters, I’ve worked with a great many female costars, and I’ve had a fair amount of female lovers, so I’m not afraid of feminine energy. In fact, I prefer it.

You dropped out of USC your junior year. Any regrets? And is it true you roomed with ER’s Anthony Edwards?
College didn’t do it for me. I was too interested in goofing off to appreciate higher learning. And yes, Anthony and I shared a place. We grew up together in Santa Barbara. He was a great roommate. I, however, continually offended everyone I lived with. It took me many more years to respect other people’s space. Now I’d be better.
