Thoughts from Pastor Dave: December 6, 2004

Have an Awe-full Christmas

What a terrible title for a Christmas article! “Have an awful Christmas, indeed.” Who is this new pastor of ours? Is he a “Grinch” in disguise? Or maybe we have a twenty-first century reincarnation of Ebenezer Scrooge in our congregation? His letter of membership from Idaho Falls hasn’t arrived yet, so maybe we can block his membership in our congregation. Do we really want to hear “Have an Awful Christmas” year after year? I think not!

And now that you mention this new pastor’s faults, look closer—he can’t even spell right. “Awful” is not spelled “A-W-E-F-U-L-L”. Well, at least that’s not how I think it should be spelled. I’ll look it up in the dictionary…Yep, here it is. “aw-ful adj. 1. Extremely bad or unpleasant: terrible.” See what I mean. Surely he doesn’t want us to have a terrible Christmas, does he? But what’s this? There is more here in my dictionary under awful: “2. Commanding awe. 3. Filled with awe.” That sounds a little more promising. “Have an AWE FILLED Christmas?” Now maybe he’s on the right track.

"In the beginning was the Word,
and the Word was with God,
and the Word was God.
He was in the beginning with God.
And the Word became flesh and lived among us,
and we have seen his glory,
the glory as of a father’s only son,
full of grace and truth." --John 1.1, 2, 14

Wow! God himself chose to become like us. That is pretty awesome in itself. Many times people don’t even understand me. Yet here is God experiencing the same things that I go through. I wonder why he chose to do that?

"An angel of the Lord appeared to him
in a dream and said, “Joseph, son
of David, do not be afraid to take
Mary as your wife, for the child
conceived in her is from the Holy
Spirit. She will bear a son, and
you are to name him Jesus, for he
will save his people from their sins." --Matthew 1.20-21

Jesus was born to take care of my sin? Now that’s awesome. Yes, I hope I will have an “Awe-full” Christmas.

     For His Glory,

  Pastor Dave
