Links to various housing listings and resources:

  1. http://www.montgomerycountymd.gov/Content/DHCA/index.asp. This is the home page of the Montgomery County Department of Housing and Community Affairs. Contains links to:
    • http://gis.co.mo.md.us/dhca. A searchable database of all commercial apartment complexes in Montgomery County. Although the information is somewhat dated, it is a wonderful resource for finding the apartments (such as Aldon Management just South of campus) that have such good rates that they never need to advertise in commercial apartment guides.
    • http://hca.emontgomery.org/Housing/index.html. Information about County-sponsored low-income rental programs. Yes, NIH graduate students easily qualify for low-income housing. In fact there are some "low-income" programs we may not qualify for because our income is too low.
    • http://www.montgomerycountymd.gov/dhctmpl.asp?url=/Content/DHCA/housing/housing_P/mpdu.asp MPDU program. Most County-sponsored programs, such as the MPDU, require an extensive application and have long waiting lists. But they can considerably lower your rent or home ownership costs if you qualify.

  2. Many apartment rentals are listed in the City Paper. It hits the street on Thursday each week, but it appears online Tuesday sometime after 3PM. The rental market in DC is very tight (as of 2001) and units are often rented out by Wednesday morning. If you are considering living in Baltimore, the Baltimore City Paper also has apartment listings.

  3. http://www.recgov.org/r&w/r&w.html. The NIH Recreation and Welfare Association website, and it's associated list of housing opportunities, http://www.recgov.org/housing/housing.html.

  4. http://www.hocmc.org/. The Housing Opportunities Commission of Montgomery County. Like the DHCA (number 1 above), this county organization administers "low-income" housing programs, both for buyers and renters. A list of apartments participating in these programs can be found at http://www.hocweb.org/housing/affor2.html.

  5. At the GSC Housing Committee's Graduate Student Bulletin Board, you can view and post housing-related messages to graduate student community.

  6. http://gpp.nih.gov. The official website of the NIH Graduate Partnerships Program. Contact the GPP office for a list of graduate students at the NIH who are willing to offer advice about looking for housing in their area of town.
