Curriculum Connections:  Science Grade 2 Topic E Small Crawling and Flying Animals

Project Description:  A technology integrated study of spiders.  The
study included research into interesting spider facts, a survey of who
liked and did not like spiders and the collection of useful, kid friendly
spider web sites.  We then created our own web site, Spooky Spiders,
and posted our project there.

Learner Expectations:
The student will:
Recognize that spiders, like humans, have homes where they meet their
basic needs of air, food, water, shelter and space.
Describe any special characteristics that help spiders to survive.
Identify the spider's role within the food chain.
Identify and give examples of ways that spiders are harmful or helpful to humans.
Recognize that there are different types of spiders, with different ways
of meeting their own needs.
Recognize that some people not do like and are even afraid of spiders.

Resources:

Class computers
Access to the Internet
A Geocities web site account
A large survey pool
Library research books about spiders

Student Tasks:

1. Research at least three interesting spider facts from the Internet and
other resources.  Write them down and be ready to share them with the
class and post them on the web site.
2. Survey your family and one other class in the school to determine
how many people like and do not like spiders.  Work together as a
group to add these numbers together to post the information on the
web site. Discuss why it is that some people do not like or are afraid
of spiders.
3. Work together to post interesting/useful spider sites on the Spooky
Spider site for other other students to use and enjoy.
