Ometepe Island, Nicaragua
Our Classroom
The Waterfall half way up the north volcano.
My Project in Nicaragua dealt with examining the ranges of bat flies (Streblidae) which are found on bats in the area.  Basically, collection of the flies, indentification, and comparison of this data with the liturature.

Bat Flies are ectoparacites that feed on the blood of bats.  There can be up to 4 or 5 species of bat flies on a single bat, each inhabiting a different region of the bat such as wings, base of the neck, and back.
The island of Ometepe is made-up of twin volcanoes.  This is a picture of one taken halfway up the other.  Cloud Forests reside at the top of both these volcanoes which made for a fantastic site as the sun shone through billions of tiny rain drops which cover everything.
Colour is the theme for the Central American and South American tropics.  Some of these plants stay more colourful throughout the year than autumn in Canada.
