Today, as I watched my grandchild, I became tearful. I am so grateful for my sobriety. I am alive to be a part of his life and the lives of my beautiful children. As I watched him play today, I was struck with the simplicity of his toys, his laugh, and his sparkling eyes.

Infants know nothing of boredom, confusion, depression, or discrimination. They simply enjoy life. Children can be just as happy playing with Tupperware and a wooden spoon as with fancy and expensive toys.

The simplicity of his joy is wonderful to behold:

I blow on his face and he smiles.

I let him grasp my finger and he smiles.

I squeeze his favorite toy and he smiles.

I make silly noises as I move the spoon towards his mouth and he smiles.

I make up silly songs and sing to him and he smiles.

Oh, to be able to go back to that innocent age, the age of not knowing all about the hostility and problems in life. Perhaps I cannot really go back, but I can use my brain to be more positive and helpful to myself. I can also try not to take life so darn seriously all of the time. I can reflect on my grandson and his simple smile and that total trust that children have in us when they are so very small.

So many adults today get caught up in the "stuff of life" and adult toys. Keeping up with the Jones's becomes a focus. The instant gratification that some have gotten used to is not always possible now. The baby boomers are entering a new phase of their lives. Are they prepared? Will they survive?

Take time to smell the roses, to watch a baby smile, and to watch the beautiful Arizona sunsets. Take time to relax and breathe. Often we move so quickly in and out of our daily lives, we miss so very much around us.

Take some personal time each day, even if only 5 minutes. Take a mini vacation and visualize a safe and comfortable place, listen to music, or read a special passage form a book. Surround yourself with relaxing images. Look at a peaceful picture on the wall. Even in a shared office, you can place a poem or some special words in your top desk drawer and you can open it and look at it from time to time to calm yourself.

Such things may seem trivial, but they are not. Over time as you look, say, listen, and read something for a moment, your body will begin to respond almost as if on command. The more you practice these strategies, the easier it becomes for you to relax and go to that special place.

We can train our minds to relax. You are in charge of your peacefulness, your stress, and your relaxation, so take some action to help yourself.
