stupid rules
In her excellent book, Woe is I(Grosset/Putnam), Patricia T. O'Conner has a chapter called " The Living Dead." The chapter is about outdated grammar rules that should be given a decent burial. Here are just a few of them:
- Don't split an infinitive.
- It's wrong to end a sentence with a preposition.
- It's wrong to start a sentence with " and" or " but."
- Use " It is I" not " It is me."
- Don't use " who" when the rule calls for " whom."
