JOHN WHITMAN

OF

WEYMOUTH

IN THE STATE OF MASSACHUSETTS

FIRST GENERATION

John Whitman (1) , our ancestor, was born in 1602, in Holt, Norfolk County, England.

He was the son of Abijah Whitman and Alice Eaton.

According to the "John Whitman Of Weymouth, Mass." book by Charles H. Farnam, John (1) left London, England on either the ship the "True Love" or the "Confidence". It is said that John (1) left his wife Ruth, whom he married in 1625, and their four children and came over on the "True Love" with his brother Zachariah, but John's name does not appear on the manifest. Zachariah's does, along with his wife Sarah and one child. The "Confidence" also does not contain John's name. So, until other documents are either transcribed or more information found, one can only give an educated guess as to which ship and date he arrived on.

It is stated in "Winthrop's Journal", that our ancestor was made free in December, 1638, which means that he had all the rights and privileges of a citizen.

Ruth later joined John (1), along with their four children and later they had five more.

They had the following children:

1. Thomas Whitman (2) born in 1629 ~ Died: November 17, 1712
2. John Whitman (2) born in 1631-1634 ~ Died: February 1, 1713
3. Sarah Whitman (2) born in 1633 ~ Died: June 11, 1718
4. Mary Whitman (2) born in 1634 ~ Died: July 10, 1716

6. Rev. Zechariah Whitman (2) born in 1644 ~ Died: November 5, 1726
7. Abiah Whitman (2) born in 1646 ~ Died: January 28, 1728
8. Judith Whitman (2)
9. Elizabeth Whitman (2) born (no record) ~ Died: February 2, 1720
