One of our members, Kerri (Jim) Whitman has mentioned doing a recipe page, and I thought it was a great idea. So, if you like to eat and have some good old or new recipes, please send them along and I will put them in their place.
It can be any kind of food, appetizers, main dishes or desserts. If they are old, it would be nice to know whose they were. Let's see how many we can get, so I need your help.

BREADS AND BISCUITS

This recipe was submitted by Kerri Whitman.
It is a slightly sweet biscuit, great hot with butter. It is called:

Bubbat

Ingredients

1/4 C. shortening
1/2 C. milk
1/3 C. sugar
1 egg
2 T. baking powder
1 1/2 C. flour
1/2 C. raisins (optional)

Directions:

Mix as you would regular biscuits, put in an 8x8 pan, bake at 425 degrees for 15-20 minutes.

MAIN DISHES

This recipe was submitted by Kerri Whitman.
She says that it's just as good as the "all-day" method, but soooo much easier! It's called:

Lazy Mans Cabbage Rolls

Ingredients

1 pound ground beef (browned, drained)
1 head of cabbage (chopped "toonie" size)
1 tin of tomato paste
2 T. parsley
1/2 cup of rice (raw)
salt and pepper
2 tins of tomato soup

Directions:

In a large bowl mix the tomato paste, parsley, salt and pepper and soup, add 2 tins of water (soup tins). In a medium size covered oven proof dish, put a layer of chopped cabbage, then ground beef, then cabbage, then top with ground beef. Sprinkle the uncooked rice over top, then pour the mixture over all. Make sure the dish is at least 1/3 full of liquid. If necessary, add more water. Bake in a slow overn, 325 degrees for 3-4 hours. Check often, test by the doneness of the cabbage. Once it is soft, remove the lid from the dish and allow the excess liquid to evaporate.

DESSERTS

These first 3 recipes are submitted by Rita Whitman.
They are from Laura Jane Whitman, my late mother-in-law. The first one is for:

Chocolate Cake

Ingredients

1 cup Sugar
1/2 cup Butter
1 Egg
1 cup Sour Milk
1 tsp. Baking Soda
1/4 cup Cocoa
2 tsp. Vanilla
1/4 tsp. Salt
Note: To sour milk, add 1 tab. vinegar to 1 cup milk.

Directions:

Cream butter "&" sugar, add beaten egg. Disolve baking soda and cocoa in sour milk. Add to mixture alternately with the flour "&" salt which has been sifted together at least 3 times. Bake in oven 375 degrees. I use about an 8x8 pan, and bake for 35-40 minutes. Both of our children made this cake for the Annapolis Valley Exhibition and won first prize.

Hot Milk Cake

Ingredients

1 cup white sugar
2 eggs
1 cup flour
1 tsp. baking powder
1 Tbsp. butter
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. vanilla or lemon or orange or both
1/2 cup hot milk

Directions:

Beat eggs until light and fluffy, about 2 minutes with electric beater. Gradually add sugar, beat 4 minutes longer. Heat milk in double boiler (add butter). Add hot milk and butter to egg and sugar mixture. Add flour, baking powder, and salt which have been sifted 3 times. Bake in an 8x8 pan at 350 degrees for 30 minutes.

This recipe will make about 12 dozen cookies, so you might want to divide it in half.
