Flores gets his act together
Espanyol coach Paco Flores believes that Sunday's victory over Tenerife has saved
his job at least in the short term. "This victory will put out some fires,
" he said. "But, these days, football has become a Roman circus."
A 2-0 victory has eased the pressure on the beleaguered coach, but he was quick to
give the credit to his players. "I want to underline how brave and good the
lads were," he said.
"They knew how important this match was, and by the end we were showing the
brilliant side of our game."
Espanyol lie eighth in the table, after winning four and losing four of their
opening nine games.
"I feel a lot calmer now," Flores went on. "My conscience is clean,
and I can carry my head high.
"I want to transmit that message to my boys because the team is the important
thing not me."
Tamudo returns fire on Espanyol director
Espanyol striker Raul Tamudo has slammed director Ramon Raventos for criticising the team's start to the season. "A supporter can express his opinion, but a director of the club should definitely not be saying things like this," he stormed.
Raventos suggested that the current side are weaker than last season's after watching Espanyol's 5-1 defeat by Real Madrid. His comments angered the players and Tamudo has stepped forward as their spokesman.
"You have never heard the players criticising the work of the board of directors," said the 23-year-old. "Everybody at the club should be dedicated to improving all aspects at Espanyol and this kind of thing certainly does not help.
"We now have to win against Rayo Vallecano this weekend to steady the ship after the heavy defeat last weekend and hearing people, who should know better, commenting in this way is not ideal preparation."
Espanyol have lost three games on the trot, dropping into the bottom three of La Liga, after winning their first game of the season.
