SIMPLE PLASTIC TEXT
Here is my tutorial on making Plastic looking text. You will need to have Paint Shop Pro5 and a basic knowledge of how it works to make the text.
Here are some samples showing what the finished text looks like:

1. Open a new image large enough to hold the text you are using.
2. Fill the background with the color of your choice. A contasting color works best. Example: A Dark colored background for light colored text etc. (see Samples above).
3. Add your text. Leave text selected during entire process. NOTE: Use a thicker text for a better effect.
4. Flood fill you text with the color of your choice.
5. Apply a cutout with the following settings:
Shadow Color = Black;
Opacity = 100;
Blur = 5;
Vertical Offset = -2;
Horizontal Offset = -2.
Click OK. Note: Fill interior with color box is UNCHECKED.
6. Go to Selections>Modify>Contract. Change pixel setting to 3. Click OK.
7. Apply a drop shadow with the following settings:
Color = White;
Opacity = 100;
Blur = 1;
Vertical Offset = -1;
Horizontal Offset = -1.
Click OK.
8. Deselect your text, and save as JPEG or Gif file.
That's it, you're done. You may want to play around with various colors to see what effects you can come up with.
For a GOLD TEXT effect, use the following text colors and a Linear Gradient Flood Fill set to 0.
Foreground Color: R 112, G 99, B 56;
Background Color: R 201, G 178, B 102.
Here are some samples of the finished text:
