So it was I found myself in Queen's Park one sunny May morning with members of Parliament strolling around and strange people doing yoga by the fountains writing the introduction to this story. The rumble of the subway shook the ground every few minutes and lent an air of foreboding to the whole thing. It was that subway rattle that first gave me the idea to use light and darkness as the main elements of my story, instead of science, as had orginally been the plan.

Of course, once I was away from science, I could no longer use Sam, which meant no Sam/Jack. I needed a 'ship to pull the story off though, so I went with one that I had never before given much consideration to.
