~That Thing You Do~
The music that floated down from the lab was uncharacteristic. Grissom actually found himself liking this one. It sounded vaguely familiar, and Grissom was distressed that he seemed to feel the urge to dance. It was not Black Flag, that was for sure.
You, doin' that thing you do
Breaking my heart into a million pieces, like you always do.
And you, don't mean to be cruel
You never even knew about the heartache I've been going through
Finally, he decided he just couldn't take it any more. He had to go see who was in the lab, and find out what they have done with Greg Sanders. As he neared his destination, he realized he was not the only person in the lab who was drawn to the music. Sara Sidle stood just outside the door, facing the direction Grissom was coming from.
Well I try and try just to forget you girl
But it's just so hard to do
Every time you do that thing you do.
Sara motioned for him to stay silent, as if anyone would hear anything over the racket. Then she crooked her finger around the corner. Grissom followed her directions and looked. There was Greg, dressed in a horrifically multicoloured shirt, partially covered with his lab coat. He had an flask in his hand, and he was singing along with the song that blared over the stereo.
I, know all the games you play
And I'm gonna find a way to let you know that you'll be mine someday.
Cause we, could be happy can't you see
If you'd only let me be the one to hold you
And keep you here with me.
Grissom squinted at the lab tech. There were tears in the young man's eyes. But he sang through them, and his voice melded perfectly with those on the CD.
Cause I try and try to forget you girl
But it's just so hard to do
Every time you do that thing you do.
Grissom felt Sara pull on his shirt. He looked at her, and watched her fingers as she signed.
"He knows."
"How?" Grissom's shock played through his fingers
Sara shrugged.
I don't ask a lot girl
But I know one thing's for sure
It's the love I haven't got girl
And I just can't take it anymore.
"I guess he always notices things about me." Sara's fingers wove out, her compassion evident, if unvoiced.
Cause we, could be happy can't you see
If you'd only let me be the one to hold you, and keep you hear with me.
Cause it hurts me so just to see you go Around with someone new
"Will he say anything?" Grissom signed.
Sara shook her head.
And if I know you you're doing that thing
Everyday just doing that thing
I can't take you doing that thing you do.
The song finished, Greg turned the stereo down, put away the flask and returned to his DNA samples. Sara walked off down the hall to complete whatever errand it was that had brought her along this path in the first place.
Grissom stayed in the doorway, watching his oblivious lab tech work his magic among the machines that put theories and innocence to the test. He stayed and watched, and a thousand questions he knew would never be answered floated through his head.
He walked slowly back to his office, thankful for what he had.
