COURSE DESCRIPTION

Stages 1 , 3 and 5. - CYCLE - 6km (out and back)

Stage .1. - 5 laps (30km) / Stage .3. - 4 laps (24km) / Stage .5. - 3 laps (18km)

Riders leave Burgess St and turn right into Ellesmore Rd. Riders follow Ellsmore Rd, which undulates gently for 1.4km before turning right where the road forks into Blue Gum Rd. Riders proceed along Blue Gum Rd (which is very narrow in places) for 600m before turning left into a sealed road which takes them a further 800m up a gentle slope before reaching a turning bay at the end of the road. Riders then turn around and head back to Burgess St along the same route and around the turning marker. Riders laps are recorded at the Burgess St turning marker.

Stage .2. - Run 12km (2 laps)

Stage .6. - Run 6km (1 lap)

Runners leave Burgess St. Start/Finish area and head S along Ellsmore Rd for 100m before crossing the railway line at Bundanoon Station. Runners then proceed S along Church St. There is a very steep down hill section and a steep hill before turning left after a further 1.2km into River View Rd. Runners follow this undulating dirt road for 1.6km before turning left where the road forks. A further 700m along this road a walking track appears on the left just past a cattle grid. Runners take this track for 900m before turning left into another walking track after going down some steps and crossing a little creek (IMPORTANT : do not go to Glow Worm Glen). This track rises sharply and takes them to William St which is 600m away. Runners then proceed W along William St for 600m before turning left into Railway Ave. Runners proceed along Railway Ave. for 500m before crossing the railway line again and proceeding to Burgess St. This is the completion of 1 lap. Runners continuing for a 2nd lap must be stamped before proceeding.

Stage .4. - Run 8km (out and back course)

Runners leave Burgess St. Start/Finish area and head S along Ellsmore Rd for 100m before crossing the railway line at Bundanoon Station. Runners then proceed S along Church St. There is a very steep down hill section and a steep hill before reaching the entrance to Morton National Park at the 2km mark. Runners then proceed along the main dirt road to Echo Point parking area, around the Gravity Fitness sign and head back N along the route they have just taken to Burgess St. This return run includes a very steep rise up Constitution Hill at the 7.5km mark.

C0MPETITORS NOTE :

* You must be aware of your surroundings at all times. Look carefully for cars, bikes and pedestrians and do not interfere with their movements.

* All competitors must familiarise themselves with the course either by studying maps, asking questions or carrying a map when competing.

* There will be marker arrows along the course at relevant intersections.

* Competitors in Run Stages 2 and 4 will have to get stamped at the halfway point of the run from the relevant course marshall.

* Iced water will be available at the Burgess St. Start/Finish area.

* Competitors must supply their own Gatorade/Powerade if so desired.

* There will be no drink stations out on the Run courses, so competitors may wish to carry their own, although in August the average temperature during the day in Bundanoon is 10-15degC, so the need for water on this route is minimal, especially as most of the course is also in shade.

TEAM FORMATION and GENERAL INFORMATION

The Bundanoon Classic is for teams of 2 to 6 people, however, individuals may attempt the race if they wish. Ideally, teams should be formed well in advance of the race so that people have time to train and prepare for the race, and so that there are no last minute problems within the teams if someone pulls out - you should be able to organise a replacement if teams are organised far enough in advance.

As far as race organisation is concerned, I need to know the names and contact address / phone numbers / email of the people in your team. One person should nominate themselves as the team organiser and it is through this person that I will predominantly communicate. Entry and waiver forms will be completed and signed on the morning of the race.

Accommodation should also be booked as soon as possible if required. The Bundanoon Hotel (phone 02 4883 6005) is the preferred option as the Saturday night will be spent there.

This event is open to the clients of Gravity Fitness and their friends and family. If you know anyone else who may be interested please give them my contact details, or vice versa.

Competitors are advised that it will be quite cold in Bundanoon in August and that warm clothing may be required while competing. Runners will possibly need to wear a singlet and long sleeve skivvy top to protect the skin from the cold and the wind chill, and cyclists will need similar if not more protection. Wet weather gear should also be taken just in case. Preparation, both in training and in organising yourself, is the key to an enjoyable and successful attempt at the Bundanoon Classic. Each competitor is also responsible for their own food and fluid needs, as endurance events such as this require that you eat and drink constantly throughout the day. Carbohydrate replacement, in solid (Power bar / Clif bar) and liquid (Gatorade / Powerade) form, is essential and not to be underestimated.

For this event to be enjoyable for all it is hoped that everyone adopts an attitude of friendly competition. We are not cut-throat professionals but are enthusiastic amateurs. This event has no place for a win-at-all-costs attitude. Your fellow competitors are your friends and should be treated as such. If you see anyone in a state of distress or injured, make sure that you offer your assistance. The course is designed that at its furthest point you will never be more than 3km from either the Start/Finish area or a Course Marshall. If there is a problem, advise the person to stay where they are, and head for assistance. Do not panic - help is on its way.

The awards for winning, and just competing, in this event are intrinsic : personal pride and a sense of satisfaction. As a group we are in Bundanoon to compete to the best of our ability, to enjoy some friendly competition and to revel in the camaraderie created by shared experience. Above all, we are in Bundanoon to live the "earn it" philosophy - it doesn't get any better than that  !
