Battle of Second Manassas

Battle of Second Manassas

A new scenario for Across 5 Aprils using the existing Bull Run map. The battle summary is from the web. I am not convinced about the numbers involved – they are just too exact. The units are based on the numbers from Battles and Leaders. The Confederate Official Campaign history was also consulted for this scenario.

Confederate Commander: Robert E. Lee

Union Commander: John Pope

Confederate Forces Engaged: 48,527

Union Forces Engaged: 75,696

Manassas, Second

Other Names: Manassas, Second Bull Run, Manassas Plains, Groveton, Gainesville, Brawner's Farm

Location: Prince William County

Campaign: Northern Virginia Campaign (June-September 1862)

Date(s): August 28-30, 1862

Principal Commanders: Maj. Gen. John Pope [US]; Gen. Robert E. Lee and Maj. Gen. Thomas J. Jackson [CS]

Forces Engaged: Armies

Estimated Casualties: 22,180 total (US 13,830; CS 8,350)

Description: In order to draw Pope’s army into battle, Jackson ordered an attack on a Federal column that was passing across his front on the Warrenton Turnpike on August 28. The fighting at Brawner Farm lasted several hours and resulted in a stalemate.  Pope became convinced that he had trapped Jackson and concentrated the bulk of his army against him. On August 29, Pope launched a series of assaults against Jackson’s position along an unfinished railroad grade. The attacks were repulsed with heavy casualties on both sides. At noon, Longstreet arrived on the field from Thoroughfare Gap and took position on Jackson’s right flank.  On August 30, Pope renewed his attacks, seemingly unaware that Longstreet was on the field. When massed Confederate artillery devastated a Union assault by Fitz John Porter’s command, Longstreet’s wing of 28,000 men counterattacked in the largest, simultaneous mass assault of the war. The Union left flank was crushed and the army driven back to Bull Run. Only an effective Union rearguard action prevented a replay of the First Manassas disaster. Pope’s retreat to Centreville was precipitous, nonetheless.  The next day, Lee ordered his army in pursuit. This was the decisive battle of the Northern Virginia Campaign.

Result(s): Confederate victory

The Counters

The counters, you can make your own or print out these Word files. Best results will come from printing onto pale grey or pale blue card. Note that the counters are in rows of back and front alternately for the same units.

17.0 Exclusive Rules

17.1 The Unfinished Railroad

Jackson’s men were used the cuttings of the unfinished railroad line as a defensive barrier. To clarify the map all unfinished railroad hexes that pass through otherwise wooded hexes are treated as wood. The unfinished railroad is treated as a track for movement when moving from 1 unfinished railroad or railroad hex to another.

17.2 Set Up and Reinforcments

Set up at start 7.00 AM 29th August.

CSA, along or to the West of the unfinished railroad from the point where it crosses the Bull Run to where it joins the existing rail line then South 1 hex to Douglas Browner farm (1916). Hill’s Division then (next South) Ewell’s Division followed by Jackson’s Division (furthest South).

Hampton + Robertson (cavalry) Hampton Cole farm (1822). Lee (Cavalry) Cooper’s Store (2805)

CSA Reinforcements

Turn 3 Entry F: Wilcox

Turn 4 Entry F: Hood

Turn 5 Entry F: Armisted

Turn 5 Entry F: Kemper

Turn 6 Entry F: Jones

USA within 3 hexes of Stone House (3213) and North of Young’s Branch (stream) Sigel. Within 3 hexes of Stone Bridge (3912) Reynolds

USA Reinforcements

Turn 1 Entry B: Heintzelman

Turn 2 Entry B: Reno

Turn 4 Entry B: Ricketts

Turn 5 Entry D: McDowell

Turn 9 Entry E: Porter

17.3 CSA Combat Marker

The CSA combat marker is not placed in the cup on turn 1. This is to simulate Jackson’s defensive stance.

17.4 Victory Conditions

Henry (3315) is not a victory hex. In addition to Stone Bridge (3912) AND Henry House Hall (3413) Sudely Church (2805) and The Dump (2312) are victory hexes. Control of the Western hexes simulates the USA angle of attack towards Jackson – they were not initially aware of Longstreet’s presence. Control of 3 out of 4 points is a minor victory and control of all 4 a major victory. In the vent of a draw the side that has eliminated the most opposing units wins a minor victory. Historical result, major CSA victory.
