An Abortionist to get an “honorary degree”

By Stephen Gray

“Pro-choice advocate Henry Morgentaler… will be among 10 distinguished individuals to receive Western’s highest honour at Spring Convocation in June.” (University of Western Ontario (UWO) Western News, March 17, 2005.)

Is the UWO scraping the bottom of the barrel when it bestows its “highest honour” upon Canada’s foremost abortionist? Can an abortionist be a “distinguished” individual? My Concise Oxford Dictionary describes distinguished as “eminent” and of “high standing.” Surely our language has become debased when the word “distinguished” is used to describe an abortionist. An abortionist is a person who makes a living from killing the child in the womb. How can this be worthy of an “honorary degree?” Is this the state our centers of higher learning are reduced to?

“On Thursday, June 16 at 10 a.m. Western will confer an honorary Doctor of Laws degree upon Dr. Henry Morgentaler…” (Western News, UWO, March 17, 2005).

Morgentaler is an abortionist who broke the law and now is to become “an honorary Doctor of Laws”? What does this say about UWO? Surely, to confer a “Doctor of Laws” upon a lawbreaker is to bring their award system into disrepute. Would any person of high standards of decency now wish to accept an “honorary degree” from UWO after this mockery of the degree system? Will alumni and financial contributors to UWO continue to support it after this questionable recognition of abortionist Morgentaler? Here are some quotes from letters to the Editor of The Gazette:

1. “I’m an alumnus of Western and now have a son attending. I am very disappointed that my very proud school is honouring a man who broke Canadian law….I’m extremely unhappy Dr. Morgentaler is one of this year’s choices, and I will not consider donating to Western in future.”

2. “I cannot believe the decision by Western to give an honorary Doctor of Laws degree to Henry Morgentaler. What kind of society have we become?”

3. “A cursory examination of the situation has led me to conclude that indoctrination at Western truly does, as long suspected, turn one’s brain to mush.

Western shall someday be the laughingstock of society if it goes forward with its plan to award Dr. Morgentaler an honorary degree.”

A faculty member had this to say in The Gazette:

Re: “Morgentaler degree causes controversy,” Mar. 23, 2005

To the Editor:
As a faculty member committed to the care and protection of children, I was deeply saddened and disappointed when I learned of the intention of the University of Western Ontario to award an honorary degree to a man who has spent his entire life in the killing of children and in encouraging others to do likewise.

This award to Henry Morgentaler brings this university and its honour into disrepute. I am also saddened for graduating students, who will see their moment of celebration and victory tainted by protest and revulsion at such a presentation.

Meanwhile, Morgentaler continues to bask in the media limelight with his abortion fixation. He had this to say to CTV: "I was willing to go to jail, I was willing to die for it," he told CTV's Canada AM Wednesday. "So when I look back on it, I look at a life of achievement because I achieved a great deal and I'm very proud of it." ( Morgentaler quote from: http://www.ctv.ca/servlet/ArticleNews/story/CTVNews/1104937361479_100346561/?hub=Entertainment

Morgentaler states he was willing to die for his pro-abortion principles. Now thousands of unborn children die because of this man. In fact, in 2003 it was reported that about 19,900 abortions occurred at Morgentaler clinics across Canada in one year (Globe and Mail, January 18, 2003). What could be “more humane” than extinguishing human life?! If his life is a life of “achievement” and something to be “proud” of then perhaps his next award will be the Order of Canada, something for which he has already been touted for by one newspaper columnist.

The act of abortion kills the child in the womb. There are various methods of doing this. The child is cut to pieces then suctioned out or poisoned by a saline solution. In a partial birth abortion the baby’s head is pierced by a sharp instrument and it brains are then suctioned out. Some babies have survived abortion but are left to die. Still I guess these abortion “procedures” are worthy of a UWO “honorary degree!”

The UWO says in its mission statement that: “The University seeks to provide an environment of free and creative inquiry within which critical thinking, humane values, and practical skills are cultivated and sustained. By pursuing these objectives, the University endeavors to serve the interests of society.”

One wonders what type of “critical thinking” and “humane values” are in the minds of the leadership of the University of Western Ontario? Or how the “interests of society” are served by conferring an “honorary degree” upon an abortionist?
