Memo to the National Post

By Stephen Gray

I read your editorial: “Memo to MPs: Take a break” June 8, 2005. I must say this editorial was worthy of Chairman David himself. Your Chairman, David Asper had a column in the National Post of May 19, 2005. Headlined: “Stephen Harper’s Tin Ear.” Where David said , “… observers are starting to take note of the nomination of socially conservative candidates in British Columbia. A pro-life, anti- gay-marriage agenda is the last thing the party needs to make inroads in Ontario and Quebec.”

And the Globe and Mail of May 27, 2005, stated: “Christian activists have secured Conservative nominations in clusters of ridings from Vancouver to Halifax -- a political penetration that has occurred even as the party tries to distance itself from hard-line social conservatism.” Imagine if homosexual or Jew was substituted in any of these quotes all hell would break loose. The anti-Semitic, and anti-homosexual labels would be affixed immediately and would get saturation coverage. And some of the media might even speculate if this was a hate crime. The double standard at play is obvious here, Christians, pro-life people and traditional marriage people can be smeared at will. And this from so-called “national newspapers.” Which raises the question: Are you people vying to be the official organs of the Liberal party? Both of you “newspapers” are sounding like they come from the same propaganda merchant. Perhaps the only solution is for you two to get together and have a media merger. Then there would be no competition over who promotes the best Liberal view.

You then go on to say in your Globe and Mail editorial, oops I mean the National Post editorial: “ Much as Parliament desperately needs a shakeup, the Conservatives would be unwise to capitalize on Ontario MP Pat O’Brien’s departure from the Liberal caucus to force a quick election.” Are you telling us: It is better to have corruption remain in power? Even though you state about the Liberals, “…a senior Cabinet minister and the Prime Minister’s chief of staff apparently spent hours hinting at rewards for an opposition backbencher if he helped keep their government alive…” You then say this, “…suggests… a distressingly low ethical standard.” A thinking person might call it attempted bribery. But hey, Liberals don’t do that. Another thinking person might say this Cabinet minister should resign. But Liberals don’t do that. And still another thinking person might ask: Is there criminal behavior in our “esteemed” House of Parliament. But hey, Liberals would never be involved in “distressingly low ethical standards.” Would they? So let’s blame the Conservatives.

Of course it’s all Harpers fault according to Chairman David, of the National Post who stated in his column of May 19, 2005: “Harper has damaged the Conservative brand far more than he seems to realize.” Memo to National Post, Harper is not the issue. Liberal corruption and malfeasance is. You people are sounding more and more like the Globe and Mail? In fact the Globe and Mail in an editorial of May 21, 2005 stated “The Liberal Party’s sponsorship scandal is not enough to make Canadians rush into Stephen Harper’s arms. He has to give them a reason.” And you in your editorial of June 8, 2005, state, “…succeeding in bringing down government would prove disastrous for the Conservatives.” Don’t you guys get it. This government has to go. It is corrupt. In fact any decent newspapers with ethics would have banner headlines every day calling for their resignation. But not you Liberal parrots. Why do you people still squawk the message it is Harper’s fault? Harper never stole the taxpayers dollars, the Liberals did. So get with the truth and stop peddling Liberal political propaganda. Take your own advice and “take a break” along with your soul mates at the Globe and Mail.
