Welcome ya'll!  come on in and sit a spell.  We have a few yarns to tell and some of the stuff is down right truth.  As a matter of fact, most of it is the down right truth because we wouldn't shuck you.  This is the website of the 8th Virginia Cavalry, Company C, Grayson Cavalry.  We are based in Southwestern Virginia and, please, don't confuse us with any Farby group you may have heard about.  We are a family oriented, authentic, progressive Civil War Reenactment and Living History Organization.  We encourage wives and children to actively participate and we place a strong emphsis on authenticity.  Ladies may participate in civilian portrayals or military portrayals.  Whatever the choice may be, the company requires a fully authentic portrayal.

This is not a Dismounted Cavalry Unit. Therefore, access to a horse is essential.  Animal husbandry is paramount in the Grayson Cavalry.  The unit judges the value of a recruit by the way he treats his family and his horse.  Each individual member is responsible for the care, feeding, grooming, training and transportation of their animal.  If you have experience training reenactment horses, you might not need any advice.  But, if you have never trained a horse to be steady under cananon fire and infantry charge, you just might need some pointers.  Every member is ready to assist new recruits in the training of the horse and the recruit.  Yep! you will need training just as much as your mount.  We use Cook's Cavalry Tactics and Manual of Arms.

The unit participates in reenactments and living histories in Pennsylvania, Virginia, Tennessee, West Virginia, Maryland and Georgia.  Membership in this organization encompasses the above areas but is not limited; thereto.  That's a fancy way of saying everybody's welcome.  When we say everybody, that is what we mean.  Grayson Cavalry does not discrimminate on the basis of race, religion, age, or creed.  Why heck, we'll even take
yankee deserters.

Now if'n this interest you, come on in and make yourself to home.  The wife just made a fresh pone of corn bread that's still hot and the buttermilk is good and cold.  Don't mind the young'uns.  They like to sit and listen to the
old folks spin yarns.
