Grayson County Homeschoolers
"CLICKY: Cooperative Learning in Central Ky" http://www.oocities.org/graysoncountyhomeschoolers email: graysoncountyhomeschoolers@yahoo.com Please tell other homeschoolers about our activities and share this newsletter. Casual, social meetings every Thursday, 1-3 p.m., at the Leitchfield City Park, at the main pavilion and playground area. This is slow to get going, so call each other and make plans to meet. It's been a long winter! Watch our website for changes and events. Kentucky Kingdom Homeschooling Day: May 26 is Homeschooler's Day at Kentucky Kingdom. Tickets are $19 each and include a CD and workbook with educational features. This is the same program that public schooled youth have enjoyed and the park has opened it to homeschoolers on this day. The Heintzmans plan to go and tickets have to be requested by May 12th. Let us know if you'd like to join in a group order. Nolin Lake Picnic Social and National Networking Afternoon: On Thursday, June 1st, noon to 5 p.m., come to the Heintzman lake house for an afternoon picnic, swim and social time with about ten teenaged lifelong homeschoolers from the northeast. These teenagers will be staying with the Heintzmans for a week-long camp that they put together all by themselves. Come meet them and enjoy the afternoon! They're a fine example of self-directed youth and all have interesting stories and skills. They are part of a larger national network of similar young people and homeschooling families. For this picnic and social afternoon, come with swimsuits, towels, and enough for your own family to eat. We will provide drinks, paper plates/utensils, and desserts. If you have floats or life vests, feel free to bring them. There's a canoe, kayak and small blow up raft for paddling. Please call Anne and Alex with any questions at 270-242-0868 or email anne.heintzman@colorado.edu. Hope to see you then! Grayson County Homeschoolers Website and other Networking: Remember our website: http://www.oocities.org/graysoncountyhomeschoolers We try to use this website as a yearly calendar/field trip alert and to spread the word about activities this year. Other helpful links for homeschoolers are listed on this website. A very helpful yearly national conference website has lots of links as well. Http://liveandlearnconference.org/ Although many of these folks are “unschoolers,” they run into the same kinds of problems/concerns as anybody else. Whether we use a curriculum or not, we all share concerns about socialization, future opportunities, difficulties about measuring achievements – and the need to know about others like/unlike ourselves. The next national conference is in Albuquerque, NM, on 9/6-11/2006. The Heintzmans have a 55-page booklet summarizing the last year's conference, so if you're interested ... let them know. Grayson County Library Summer Reading Program: The summer reading program through the Grayson County Library is preparing for registration. There are specific days and times for registration and programs serve both younger kids through teenagers. They have some good themes coming up and, if the kids complete the reading series, they will enjoy a week-long celebration/day camp in the park. Sign up! Summer Events: Some folks have mentioned that group camping, hiking, and other summer events would be welcome. If you'd like to organize such an event, please do so! Send the information to the Heintzmans to be placed on the website. We'd all enjoy a little more social time. If you have questions, suggestions or just want to know what's going on, let us know and we'll try to help! Contact Anne & Alex: anne.heintzman@colorado.edu or 270-242-0868. |
