I am a language junkie. Since I was small, I've been fascinated by
those strange and wonderful sounds which emanate from the mouths of
strangers and mean something. Unfortunately, I am also a
lazybones and a procrastinator, which means I have to have a Really
Compelling Reason to get past "how do you do". I learned English
because, well, it was sink-or-swim at an early age. I began learning
Dutch out of my junkiedom, but the reason I've ultimately stuck with
it and become passably fluent is the man I love and live with.
He, his family, and his friends have been patient and helpful beyond
duty. (And it hasn't hurt that his mom speaks no English.)
Sadly enough, I haven't fared as well with other languages, though I
do still try. I have enough language books at home to start a small
library. (And Hugo is retiring wealthy.) But there is hope!
If you, too, are a language junkie, or a native speaker wanting to
exchange your perfect prose for bumbling, ill-formed phrases with the
promise of improvement over time, write me!
