| As Canadians, we are the first to complain about our government and taxes and anything else we think is wrong with our country. But when the need arises, Canadians are fiercely patriotic. While we may not be as outgoing with our patriotism as say, the United States, who feel they have to show the world just how patriotic they are every chance they get, we show it in our own unique way. In 1995 when we almost lost Quebec to separation, tens of thousands of Canadians descended down on Montreal to show their Canadian pride. And what about when the Heritage Minister made the call to give away Canadian Flags...the phone lines were jammed for days on end. Our pride in our country continues to swell, especially in the past few years, and what is it that brought this sudden source of nationalism?? A beer commercial! How ironic it is, that the one thing that united all Canadians, is a beer commercial, now how cool is that! All of Canada, especially those who live along the border, have been accused of becoming "Americanized". It is said that the United States has such a large presence in Canadian society that we have lost our identity as Canadians. While I agree that the states do have a presence in our lives here in Canada, they have not overshadowed what makes us unique. That is what this site is for, It is my little corner of the web to celebrate Canadian nationalism and what makes us great as Canadians, namely our culture, and a quirky sense of humour! |
