A Quiet Sunday
Sunday morning arose to a Church of England service for all the passengers wishing to attend.  The first class one was presided over by Captain Smith, and the second class one was being help by assistant purser Reginald Barker.  Father Thomas Bayles also was holding a Catholic Mass for second class, followed by one for third.
     While most of
Titanic's passengers were eating lunch, the two wireless opperators, Jack Phillips, 25, and Harold Bride, 21, were hard at work trying to keep up with the backlog of messages they had from the passengers.  At 1:40pm as the men worked, a message came through the receiver.  It was from the White Star liner Baltic:  "Captain Smith, Titanic.  Have had moderate variable winds and fine weather since leaving.  Greek steamer Athinai reports passing icebergs and large quantity of field ice today in latitude 41.51 north, longitude 49.52 west.  Last night we spoke [with] German oil tanker Deutschland, Stettin to Philadelphia, not under control; short on coal; latitude 40.42 north, longitude 55.11.  Wishes to be reported to New York and all other steamers.  Wish you and Titanic all sucess".  Bride took the message with him to Captain Smith, who instead of handing it to the officer of the watch, took it with him as he headed to A deck..  Smith had shown a message received earlier from the Cunard line's Caronia to Second Officer Charles Lightoller a short time before 1:00pm and had it posted in the chart room.  As Smith walked along the A deck promenade, he found Bruce Ismay, and handed him the message without comment before going in for lunch.  Ismay just glanced at it, put it in his pocket and went below.
Soon after lunch, because of the cold, many third class passengers sought shelter from the wind and began dancing in the third class general room under the poop deck and under the aft well deck.  A number of off duty crewmen joined the fun too, but they didn't drunk as this was against the White Star rules.  The viabration in that area must have been more violent than ever before, as two more boilers had been lit up that morning, and the turbines were now working faster than ever before.
At about 5:00pm, Marian Thayer, whose husband was the vice presedent of the Pennsylvania Railroad went to the state room of friend and fellow Philadephian Emily Ryerson and asked if she would care for a stroll on the promenade deck.  Ryerson, who had not ventured out of her cabin except at meal times was reluctant, but accepted.  The reason for her being locked away in her room was for she was in mourning.  Her oldest son had been killed in a car accident recently, and she was journying back to America with her husband Auther, two daughters and younger son.
The two women walked for over an hour, finally resting on some deck chairs.  Not long after they had sat down, Bruce Ismay appeared and sat down in a deck chair beside them.
"I hope you are all right and well," he said to Emily, made awear of her families sircumstances when the family boarded at Cherbourg.  He had assigned an extra stateroom and steward to them when the voyage began.  Emily was grateful for his kindness, but instead wished Ismay would leave.
"We are among the icebergs," he casually said, fishing the
Baltic message out of his pocket.  Emily galnced at it and asked about the mention of the Deustchland.
"It's the Deutschland wanting a tow, not under control," Ismay replied.  When asked about what he was going to do about it, Ismay replied that he wasn't going to do anything about it, and said that he wanted to show the world just what Titanic could do and get into New York on Tuesday evening.
When the women's husbands approached, Ismay left, and when the Ryersons' got back to their stateroom, the two of them began talking about what would happen if they reached New York a day earlier.
Ismay would later testify that at 7:10pm, he sat in the smoking room when Captain Smith approached.
"By the way, sir, have you got the telegram that I gave to you this afternoon?" Smith asked.
"Yes, here it is," said Ismay taking the note out of his pocket.
"I want to put it in the Officer's chart room," said Smith, and with that, he turned and walked away with the message.
