The "Great Punkin" Cessna 170B with the Franklin 220 Conversion |

Our 1952 170B, affectionately dubbed "Punkin" on the day of purchase because of the paint job she sports, underwent a powerplant transplant in the fall of 2001. We swapped out the old Continental O-300A in lieu of a brand new PZL-Franklin 6A-350-C1R of 220 horsepower. The transformation has become known as "The Great Punkin project, powered by Franklinstein"! The conversion was done by Gregg Horrell of Ryan Aero Service at Ryan Field in Tucson, AZ. As work progressed I documented and took a few pictures along the way.

Above and Left: October 26, 2001. The last flight on the old O-300A terminated with 1974 hours SMOH. It ran smoothly and faithfully until we pulled the mixture lean in front of Gregg's hangar. We removed the old engine in about an hour. Much easier to remove than install!
Below: The first step after removal, cleanup! We decided to remove everything and polish the firewall. Accessory case oil leaks will be easy to diagnose!

Fabrication of the new instrument cluster sub-panel based on the old one...
Above left: installing heat blanket/sound proofing to the back of the firewall. Above right: firewall eyeball assemblies to clean up engine control cable and instrument cable/wiring exit holes from the flight deck. Below: Initial installation of the engine mount. |

Above: ADF removed, new SigmaTech ASI (200 mph range), AI, RCAllen TC, MP gauge, tachometer (reverse drive - cool!), ammeter, oil temp & press, suction gauges, overhauled 8-day clock, EDM-700 engine analyzer, all Vernier engine controls, and new electrical system switches and circuit breakers. The lower right sub-panel was replaced in the winter of 2003, adding a JPI Fuel Scan 450 and a PS Engineering CD Player/Intercom.
Now we just have to figger out what to do with the lower left sub panel. It would be nice to fit a VOR/LOC/GS receiver in there for redundancy and maybe dropping down through a marine layer along the coast... (No serious IFR for this bird - we do that enough at work!)
