In remembrance of those who gave up their tomorrows so that we could have our todays. --Gen. Norman Schwartzkopf |
French &Indian War Links |
If you visit this site, make sure to click on the 'table of contents' section first. It has alot of detail about this war, including a neat glossary of 18th century military terms. |
This site has a brief history of the war with few, if any, details, and promotes a book on this conflict. A good summary though. |
Revolutionary War Links |
Revwar.com--This site was started by a reenactor with a serious passion and extensive knowledge about the Revolutionary War. While he doesn't cite alot of sources, the information appears to be valid. Definitely take a look at the message board archives, which I found interesting because of the questions/answers. There are lots of links to other Revolutionary War resources. |
This site, of the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution, was somewhat interesting as well. |
This site gives you more information than you ever wanted to know about the Hessians, and their role with the British. Its a "must visit" if you are studying this war. |
Yahoo search results--if you want to surf around yourself. If you find any more sites that strike your fancy, please let me know and I might list them here. |
War of 1812 |
(left) US Frigate Constellation vs. HMS Shannon off Boston Light House June 1, 1813. It was during this action the motto "Don't give up the ship" was uttered by the dying American officer, Captain Lawrence, as the Americans lost this battle. |
This site has an interesting chronology of significant events. |
This is probably the most interesting site I found. This person has an alternative (and I interpreted it as anti-American) view on the causes of this war. Check it out and see if you think it has an anti-American slant or if I'm reading too much into it. Frankly, I saw no mention of the conventional American view that says boardings of American ships and Impressment by the British in the years prior to the war were among the biggest causes. |
Here you will find discussion of the causes of this war from the American viewpoint. |
Military Heritage.com, the source of the picture above, has alot of interesting stuff. However, much of it is of more interest to 18th & 19th century re-enactors. Also has other stuff for sale, such as artist's prints like the picture above. Despite all that, it is still an interesting site. |
Indian Wars--Note: In the historical timeline, the Indian Wars (400 years' worth--yes, they are more than just the"old West cowboys & Indians" battles of the 1800s) overlap many other conflicts. They are included at this point on the page simply for convenience. |
This site has a brief history of the Indian Wars. Also of interest is this person's Native American Gallery (not war-related) |
Here you will find letters and other documents from those who fought. The documents are lengthy, so visiting this site will take alot of time, but its well worth it. |
This site, a genealogy research site pertaining specifically to early American settlers held captive or killed by the Indians, is interesting just for curiosity's sake. Its only worth a quick look unless you have ancestors who were early pioneers out West. I guess its true that you CAN find anything on the web. :-) |
This site has book excerpts about the Indian wars, mostly accounts by settlers and explorers that have appeared in various books. Its an interesting idea for the web. Also check out other excerpts at this same site regarding other conflicts. |
Here is the Indian Wars page of the US Wars web site. It has a good chronology and good essays. You'll find that this web site is organized much like this page you're reading now, so check out the links on the left and you'll find information on other wars as well. |
Here is a nice page dealing with the 17th & 18th century Indian wars. It is a series of essays that appear to have been culled from encyclopedias and such. It appears to have been created by a high school or undergrad student and is very well done and informative. |
There are several good Trail of Tears sites. If you're not familiar with the Trail of Tears, you really should check these out. And even if you are, its a good refresher. Trail of Tears site #1 Trail of Tears site #2 Trail of Tears site #3--This site has an account of this march by a Private in the US Army. Also check out the Cherokee page at this same site. |
Also check out the Yahoo search results organized by PEOPLE and BATTLES & CAMPAIGNS for links to the personalities and battles of the Indian Wars. |
Mexican War |
This is Historyguy.com's section on this conflict. See my general links at the bottom of this page for more info. about this site. |
This site, set up by the Decendants of Mexican War Veterans, is very well-organized and comprehensive. Probably the best site I've seen on this topic, not that there are alot of resources on this. But still an excellent site. Please check out the Images section of this site for excellent paintings depicting this war. It is fantastic, in my opinion. Instead of borrowing an image and putting it in this section of the page like I did for the other wars, I hope the absence of a picture here will encourage you to check out the artwork. |
The American Civil War |
This site highlights Civil War photography, and is the source of the pictures of Grant and Lee above. |
Here is a computerized database from the National Park Service containing very basic facts about soldiers who served on both sides. |
At this site, there is a real wealth of information divided neatly into subject areas. Topics from Jewish-Americans in the Civil War to Civil War poetry, music, and just about anything else you can think of. |
Civil War Archive.com --Unable to determine the author's credentials but interesting. |
PeninsulaCampaign.org --site owned by the Virginia War Museum. |
Here is a nice site with lots of photographs. |

Thomas Jefferson info.--This site belongs to a Jefferson interpreter (re-enactor). |
I've always believed that the present can not be fully understood unless one has at least a basic understanding of our past. America has, in part, been defined by the military conflicts that it has faced, as best exemplified by the Revolutionary War. It is important for every American to have some understanding of our military history because it is an important patch in the historical quilt that covers our country. It is, however, often trumped in our societal consciousness by the social, political, and economic patches of the quilt. Stories of entrepreneurs, millionaires, and politicians seem to raise more interest than stories of those who sacrificed a normal life to fight for something bigger than themselves. While sometimes unfairly criticized as "war mongering" by those who have no appreciation of the benefit of living in this great country, I firmly believe that to study military history is to honor those who gave their lives so we would have the freedom, prosperity, and technological advancement to do something as silly as making web pages. It also honors those currently in uniform who have chosen to serve our country in the present. Beyond being a tool to understand the present, such pursuits can lead to some interesting philosophical questions. For example, is the world any different because MacArthur was not allowed to attack across the Yalu River? Would it change your opinion of FDR if you believed that Pearl Harbor was no surprise and he had the blood of over 2200 people on his hands? (Stinnet's "Day of Deceit" makes it hard not to believe this, and should be required reading, in my opinion) You are invited to dig around these links and I hope you will find this stuff interesting. If you have any potential links to add or want to report a dead link, please use the email contact box at the bottom of this page. Thanks for visiting. |
