Brief Overview
Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) surfaces in children normally between the ages of 5 and 15, but can develop into middle age; it is the most common inherited neurological disease. It is present in people worldwide and there is not a single ethnic group that it affects more so than any other. The severity of it can even vary within the same family. It is caused by mutations in genes that produce proteins involved in the structure and function of either the peripheral nerve axon or the myelin sheath, leading to degeneration of peroneal muscles. The examining physician will look for muscle weakness in the feet, leg, arms and hands, decreased muscle bulk, reduced tendon reflexes and sensory loss, problems with balance and hand function, when CMT is suspected. High arches, hammertoes, inverted heel or flat feet are also deformities that are common symptoms with the disease. Scoliosis is often seen in people with CMT. It does not affect life expectancy or mental capabilities and is usually slow in progression. One in 2,000 people are affected by the disease.(1-4)
