THE GREEK CIVIL WAR

The Greek civil war is the war fought between the forces of the Communist Party of Greece (kke) which never represented more than 5% of the Greek people and rest of the Greek people who resisted the violent attempt of the communists to seize the power. It was fought from 1941 - 1949 and created more deads and ruins in Greece than the Axis invasion and the following occupation. The neighbouring communist countries saw the Greek civil war as a chance to promote teritorrial claims against Greece, helping the communist partizans and pressing them to accept their claims in case of a communist victory.  During the last months of the civil war the communist partizans were forced to accept in their "government" a Bulgarian minister.

With the support of the rest free world but mostly the U.S.A. and Britain Greeks managed to defend their freedom against the communists who were helped by all neighbouring communist countries. This is the first victory of the free world against Communist forces.
It is noteable that almost none U.S. or British soldier (with the exception of certain Btritish units in  the battle for Athens in December of 1944)  fought during the Greek civil war. The support was diplomatic, military supplies and economic help of the Marshall plan. There were some U.S. military advisors but they were really few and never participated in front line operations

I considered it necessary to create this article when I realized that the web is filled with pro-communist articles on this subject. The article is based on similar procommunist articles but I tried to be more objective. I hope that soon I will enrich it with photos and other documents.
