| Quick Facts -Born in 620 B.C. -Died in 580 B.C. -Lived in Mytilene in Lesbos About his Writing Alcaeus wrote drinking songs, hymns, love songs, and poems with political themes. The Alcaic strophe, a four-line stanza, is said to be his invention and was often used by Greek lyrists. A collection of his poems was made in the second century B.C., but this collection has now been lost. Today, only small segments of his writing are still known. The Roman lyric poet Horace used some of Alcaeus' writing as a model. Other Information about his Life He was in a number of political disputes in his city and was forced into exile. He later returned to Lesbos after becoming reconciled with Pittacus, the leader of the popular party.
