Wild, Wonderful West Virginia
Take me home...

Early in the American Civil War (1861-1865), the northwestern Virginia settlers repudiated the ordinance of succession and formed a provisional government of their own in Wheeling. On June 20,1863, West Virginia was admitted to the Union as the 35th state. Although the northern most counties of Virginia were geographically and politically part with Virginia, President Lincoln and the Union ensured that the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad was within their boundaries by making Berkeley, Jefferson, and  Morgan counties part of the new state. The present state capital is located in Charleston.  WV's motto is "Montani semper liberi" ("Mountaineers always freemen").
