The Moeraki Boulders.

The coastal village of Moeraki, situated approximately an hours drive from Dunedin, is supported by its fishing fleet. It is a stunning place to visit, not least for the amazing Moeraki Boulders. Huge spheres, they formed over thousands of years and now, with the erosion of the sea, are becoming a spectacular part of the coastal heritage. Many have split into pieces, an array of crystals inside making them all exciting to see. Crusted over by molluscs, they carry a coating of seaweed and provide a home for many tiny creatures!

This gives some idea of the scale of things. The boulders come in assorted sizes, some are partly buried in the sand, others stand quite proudly. These were too good not to photograph, showing the tessellated structure that forms the outer crust.

Like huge marbles, strewn by a giants hand...

Even Heath was able to frollic here and have fun!

A short drive south of Moeraki is Shag Point. Once a thriving mining colony, the old miners houses line the road which leads to a nature reserve, where NZ fur seals and Yellow Eyed Penguins are.

Having disturbed their siesta, these playful seals posed for a photo, before grunting and settling down once more!
