How many plugs should I order?

Measure the area you wish to plug. (Ex. 20 feet X 25 feet = 500 sq.feet) The recommended, most cost effecient way, is to place a plug every sq. foot.. It will take approximately three growing seasons for complete coverage of zoysia. You can plant plugs closer if you want coverage sooner, but the amount of plugs needed more than doubles.

What is the difference between Greenfield Zoysia plugs and other mail order plugs?

QUALITY! I have been selling zoysia plugs for over 30 years. I have gained many customers that have been dissatisfied with mail-order plugs. I have seen other mail order plugs, and am amazed that a company would sell such a product. Unfortunately, you hardly get what you pay for, and I haven't even mentioned the 'plugger' they sell you. Our plugs are fresh green little pieses of lawn ready to be transplanted into your yard. Our custom designed (pat.pend) plugging tools are full size, and solid steel. They can be resharpened season after season for a lifetime of use. We are proud of our plugs and plugger tool. I would never sell anything that I wasn't willing to buy myself.

Sod vs. Plugs?

Growing zoysia from plugs is not instant, sod is. When you completely sod your yard with zoysia slabs, you instantly go from bare ground to thick, lush lawn. This can be very expensive depending on the size of your yard. Plugs are the most cost effective way to establish zoysia. With one plug every square foot, zoysia should fully cover by the third growing season.

Will Zoysia grow in shade?

Zoysia prefers full sun, but will tolerate SOME shade. If you have a shaded area of your lawn, such as under a large tree, zoysia will eventually creep in, but only to the point where it receives at least a few hours of warm afternoon sun. Zoysia thrives in full sun. The zoysia on the edge of the shade line will not be as hardy. If your yard is NOT mostly sunny, I would either suggest growing a different type of grass or landscaping the more shaded areas, depending on the situation.

Why are weed killers so bad for Zoysia?

For the most part, common lawn weeds are considered a wide leaf grass. Weed killers are specifically designed to eliminate wide blade grasses like crab grass or water grass. While zoysia grass is not a 'weed' it falls under this wide blade category. Weed killers, when applied properly, won't necessarily kill zoysia, they stunt its growth and weaken it. A healthy established zoysia lawn will choke out weeds naturally. Use spot treatment for weed control.. If you have large patches of weeds in an established zoysia lawn, this usually indicates a more serious problem under the soil such as grubs.

What is thatch?

Thatch is a layer of organic matter that is 'exfoliated' and begins to 'mat' between the base of a plant and the soil. Usually discussed as a problem with zoysia lawns as dried clippings around stems accumulate. Proponents of organic philosophy say that when soil has achieved a healthy balance, microorganisms are present to feed on mulched grass clipping and prevent thatch build up. However, if long grass (generally growth of more than two weeks) is cut and mulched, there may be an excess of clippings which is too great for the existing population of microbes to handle. As a rule of green thumb, the first mowing of the season should be very short to expose the thatch layer. After bagging the clippings, use a flexible rake to loosen and remove excess clippings. I have heard horror stories about people who burn their zoysia lawns to remove thatch. Besides risking burning your house down,(or your neighbors) this leaves bare spots which encourage weed germination. Expensive 'de-thatching' and 'aeration' services are not needed. A simple flexible leaf rake is all you need.
