John Jack Johnson 1. ALBANY The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord, and he delighted in his way. Psalms 37:23 On July 4, 2004 at 9:15 p.m., the angel of the Lord visited the Rev. John Jack Johnson (Bro. Jack) and took him home to be with the Lord. Elder Johnson was born to the late Sam and Mary Johnson in Shubuta, Miss. on August 17, 1909. During his childhood in Miss., Bro. Jack attended the Shubuta Public School System. December 14, 1931, this Man of the People moved to Albany, N.Y. where he met and married Dorothy M. Charles. To this union, seven children were born, five boys and two girls. From 1932 to 1990, he transported over 100 families from Shubuta, Miss. to Albany, N.Y. He became known as the Modern Day Harriet Tubman. In 1952, Elder Johnson founded St. John's COGIC at 7 Dungan Ave. in Albany, N.Y. The services for Elder Johnson's Going Home Celebration will be held Friday, July 9, 2004 at 7:00 p.m. at St. John's COGIC, 94 Herkimer St., Albany, N.Y.; Saturday, July 10, 2004 at St. John's COGIC, 94 Herkimer St., Albany, N.Y. The body will lie in state from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. There will be two services. At 3:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. Sunday, July 11, 2004 at 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. (wake). The official wake and service at Wilborn Temple COGIC, 121 Jay St., Albany, N.Y. (official service begins at 5:00 p.m.) His life and deeds will be cherished by his four sons, Rev. McKinley B. Johnson Sr. (Sue), Theodore C. Johnson (Shilene), both of Albany, N.Y., Rev. Samuel Johnson (Helen) of Norristown, Pa., Edward Johnson of Hartford, Conn.; two daughters, Patricia A. Hart of Albany, N.Y. and Cherie Fletcher (Edward) of Newport News, Va.; one sister, Lucy Oakley of Mobile, Ala.; one brother, Rev. Labor Johnson of Albany, N.Y.; 27 grandchildren; 59 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren along with other relatives and friends. His wife, Dorothy Mary Johnson, and his son, Andrew L. Johnson preceded him in death. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Garland Bros., 75 Clinton Ave., Albany, N.Y.
