The Greenon High School wrestling team again proved that they have some of the toughest wrestlers in the area as they competed in the Division II District Tournament held at South High School February 23rd and 24th. Four Greenon wrestlers who had qualified for the District Meet, Doug Sczcublewski, Zach Treolo, Sean Christensen, and Chris Wolf, went a combined 12-7 against the top wrestlers from the Southwestern District High Schools. Greenon had two individual wrestlers qualify for the State Wrestling Meet in Columbus, Ohio next week as Sean Christensen finished in 3rd Place in the 152 lb weight class and Chris Wolf took 4th place in the 215 lb weight class. The top 4 wrestlers from each weight division advance to the State Meet. This is the first time in memory that Greenon was able to send two wrestler's to the state in consecutive seasons.
Sean Christensen, who was a State Qualifier for Greenon last season as a Junior, went 5-1 at the meet to again qualify for the State Tournament this season. Sean won his first match 8-1, but was bumped down to the consolation bracket when he lost his second match 14-7. Once in the consolation bracket, Sean had no margin of error as he needed to win his next 3 match’s to qualify for the State tournament. Sean did so in impressive fashion as he won by scores of 9-2, 7-5 and 8-6. Those wins plus a win by default improved Sean’s record for the season to 31-4.
Chris Wolf’s journey to the State tournament was an impressive show of courage and strength as bounced back from a first round loss and then, facing elimination in each match, was able to put together the best wrestling stretch of his career as strung together four straight wins to qualify for the State Meet. It was not an easy path for Chris. In his fourth match he faced returning State Qualifier and Sectional Champion Dustin Epperson from Bellefontaine. Chris had faced Dustin several times before during his distinguished career without any success, however, this match proved different as Chris rose to the occasion with a satisfying 1-0 overtime defeat of Dustin. That victory was important, but Chris still needed one more win to qualify for the State Tournament – and it happened to be against a wrestler from Logan Elm High school named Tyler Jenkins who had 40 victory’s for the season! Undaunted, Chris defeated his opponent 7-4 to qualify for the State tournament.
Doug Szczublewski at 119 pounds and Zach Treolo at 130 pounds were also able to garner some victory’s. Doug went 2-2 as he lost his last match by a close score of 4-2. Still, it was an impressive tournament for the Junior as he only fell two wins shy of qualifying for the State Meet in Columbus. Doug concluded this season with a stellar 30-11 record. Fellow Junior Zach Treolo was able to notch a quick pin (15 seconds) before being eliminated in his last match by a 10-4 score. Zach ended his season with a record of 16-11.
