The sound quality on both of these discs is pretty good. Unfortunately that's about the most appealing thing about both of them. I am not a Beach Boys fan who rationalizes that the '70s material 'wasn't all that bad.' The truth is: some of this music is complete shit. There's no wonder why it wasn't released, and it's amazing that some of it actually was. Drugs and mental problems did more to Brian's brain than you will ever know. Until you listen to this, that is.
All of that said, some Beach Boys fans may still be interested in this. There are some good tracks here and there, but most of them are available on the Good Vibrations box set in their final versions. If you really desire alternate versions and mixes of these songs, than this might be of interest to you. Landlocked is far better than Adult Child, and songs like Loop De Loop, Susie Cincinnati, Good Time, 'Til I Die are all listenable. In an interested note, this is the original line-up for the 'Landlocked' album that was submitted to their label and ultimately rejected. And now you can hear first-hand why!
On Adult Child we hear the latter part of Brian's mid-70s 'comeback,' which it turns out wasn't much of a comeback at all. Granted, The Beach Boys Love You is an interesting album with some very good songs, recorded in a rather lame fashion. But Adult Child is worth owning for it's humor-value and that's all. I almost piss myself every time I hear "Life Is For The Living," a corny song with cheesy horn arrangments and one of the worst Carl Wilson vocals you've ever heard. It all goes down-hill from there. The famous cigarette song is here and you just might bust a gut within seconds of hearing the opening line, "Cigarette butt when it hits the water goes pssssssssstttttt." It's really sad to contemplate that this man once recorded 'Pet Sounds.' Other amazing highlights of Brian's deterioration include the insipid "Hey Little Tomboy," his stupid arrangement of "Shortin' Bread," Al's nauseating vocal stylings on "On Broadway," and the banal "Lines."
Anyway don't let this rant scare you off. If you're really into the Beach Boys, especially the 70s stuff, you'll probably want this one. Again, the sound quality is really good.
