Reenactor's Corner

Have you read a book lately about your historical period which you think is the best/worst book covering that period? Share your view here. Have you found a pattern to be particularly easy/hard to follow when constructing a costume? Let us know about it.

Simplicity Needs to Catch Up!! The mundane pattern companies are finally coming out with some very nice historical costuming. Unfortunately, they are mostly for women. I don't know why they don't believe men need historical costuming that is accurate, or as cloe to accurate as their patterns get, but they don't. Maybe we need to send them a mountain of letters? Write the companies and tell them that women aren't the only people who would appreciate historical patterns that look like actual reproductions of long-ago styles?

Your Opinions Are Welcome!

What we've heard from the Opinion Poll Nothing yet! But, we're hopeful that you will help us out by taking the Opinion Poll (follow the link below).

No Sh*t, There I Was!

One of the greatest things about being a reenactor is having more experienced reenactors to show you the ropes. So let this be your place to share with the newbies (new reenactors).

Has This Ever Happened to You? When I was just a newbie, I was rather unschooled in the proper methods of tailoring costumes. I was at a meeting of our medieval dance troupe one night, and was sewing a bodice together. A shadow fell over me and I looked up from my work to see one of the older re-enactors standing over me. She was watching me hand-stich the bodice and frowning. Then she looked at me disdainfully and said "You're doing it wrong." Rather than wait for me to ask her advice on how to do it "correctly," she just walked away. Leaving me sitting there feeling very, very annoyed at her high-handed manner.

If you are new to re-enacting, don't let this happen to you. If someone tells you you're doing something wrong, ask them to show you how it should be done or direct you to research you can study to learn. NEVER let someone treat you like an insect because they know more than you do.

Opinion Poll
We've put together a little poll for anyone interested to fill out. It covers people's opinions on how reenacting and living history can benefit or detract from a person's experience in learning history. Take a few minutes and fill it out. We'll post some of the responses above.
