James Bain died on April 16, 1896 and was buried in the Cottage Hill Cemetery, outside of Brazil, Indiana (see directions). His tombstone states that he was age 57 years, 8 months, and 16 days. His birthday was calculated using this information, since he stated in the 1880 census that he was 40 years old. On the same tombstone is the inscription: Ann, wife of J. Bain, died 4 Nov. 1900, age 57 years. Birth information given in the 1900 census was April 1842 and age given in 1880 census was 38. Directions to Cottage Hill Cemetery: From center of town in Brazil, Indiana, go due west on National Highway, continuing about 1/2 mile straight ahead on SR340 after US40 vears off to the left. Cemetery is on the right. The plot of James and Ann Bain is in Block 4, which adjoins the central circle on the northwest. Note: Naturalization Service Records, Clay County, Indiana, Vol. 1 to 1872, p. 318, Declaration of Intent. Transcription: I, James Bain, born in Scotland, age 31, Migrated from Glasgow, 16 day of Sept. 1869. Arrived in United States on 1 day of Oct. 1869. I am subject to Victoria, Queen of United Kingdom of Great Britian & Ireland. Signed James Bain. Declared at Bowling Green, Clay Co., Indiana, on 28 day of Sept. 1872. Clerk Charles H. Knight. End of Transcription. (Note this date of arrival from Scotland might be more accurate than James, his son's, estimate of arrival on his Declaration when he was 57 years old.) Ann Bain's death certificate stated that she lived in Knightsville, Indiana at her death. Date of death 11/04/1900. Date of Burial 11/06/1900. Age at death, 58. Father's name James Jones. Father's birthplace, Scotland. Mother's maiden name Janet Anderson. Mother's birthplace, Scotland. Place of death: residence. Manner of death: Natural. Cause of death: blood poisoning. The names of Ann's parents is contradictory to her marriage record in Scotland, which names her as Ann McMurtrie. Also in the Index to Supplemental Record, Marriage Transcript, Clay Co., Indiana, the parents of James Bain, Jr. are named as James Sr. and Ann McMurtrie. Book C-23, p. 184. What happened to John Bain, their son, is unknown, since there is no further record of him. There were also two other children born to James Bain and Ann McMurtrie. In the 1900 census Ann states she is the mother of 12 children, 8 of whom were still alive. |
