The following pictures are courtesy of Glenn Tremblay. They are pictures of and by his father taken in the winter of 1945-46 at Presque Isle, Maine. Presque Isle was an Army Airforce Search and Rescue Kennel. The first intent of the M7 was as an AAF search and rescue vehicle ,and these pics show it was positively used in that roll. You can see from the white stuff on the ground that there was a need for an oversnow rescue vehicle even in the continental United States, let alone the Alaskan ferry route ,or The Canol Project, or Greenland, and other snow prone theatres of operation.

This M7 , having broken through the ice is not going anywhere soon. One can see why having sleigh dogs as back-up would be prudent.
