It is essential that the following tamping instructions are used to ensure a proper foundation for the Groundmaster Flooring System!

TOOLS REQUIRED: Tamping tool [perferably a mechanical tamper (a roller is NOT recommended as it does not compact firmly enough)], circular or jig saw, large tin snips (to make cuts around posts), measuring tape, hammer, and gloves.

Like no other stall flooring, Groundmaster flooring is a soil stabilization system, NOT a rubber mat, and it requires a base that has the following criteria:

1.
Base Material Size: The base material needs to be a 1/4 inch in size or smaller. This size is required so that the base material can come from the bottom up through the cups in the flooring, filling the cups with the base. Rock screenings are recommended.

2.
Base Material Drainage: The base material must be porous to allow for suffcient drainage. This makes the bedding material last much longer than normal.

3.
Base Material Compaction: The base material needs to be material which can be firmly compacted. There are different materials in all parts of the country that are acceptable. Sand or pea gravel are not acceptable materials because they will not stay compacted. We recommend at least 4 (four) inches of compacted base and 2 (two) inches of loose base.**

          A.  The compacted base will help prevent any future settling or shifting. The base material should be laid down in increments of 2 (two) inches at a time.  After the first layer has been laid, use the tamping tool to compact the base. Damping the base with water helps the base to be compacted more firmly.  Repeat the same process of laying 2 (two) inches of base and tamping until the acquired thickness is obtained.

          B.  The loose base will recieve the floor during installation. This last 2 (two) inches should be added the same day you install the floors and should be left loose and untamped. Use a straight edge (example-a 2x4 board) to work the last 2 (two) inches back and forth until the base is smooth and level. Once the floor is laid on top of the loose base, the tamping tool should be used over the entire surface of the floor to compat the last 2 (two) inches.

**NOTE:  Each farm has a different virgin soil, therefore, in some cases it will not be necessary to use several inches of base material. Speaking with a represetative will help further assist you with any questions relating to proper base preperation and installation.
